Tutuorial Stage 20-B: Low-risk Down Attacks

I ran a search looking for tutorial help, and looked back few pages, but I couldn't find anything on this issue. I'm sorry if it's already been addressed.

But, as you can guess, I'm going through Tutorial mode in VF4:Evo on PS2, and I've reached stage 20-B with Kage. This is where they explain low-risk down attacks; that is, how to enter a command that lets you do a down attack if the opponent is staying on the mat or jump away if the opponent is recovering.

The tutorial says to [7][P] and then hold [P] when an opponent is down to accomplish this. Strangely enough, when demonstrating this, it uses a dummy Lion instead of Kage to demonstrate it.

But when I attempt to do it, the game doesn't recognize the command. Kage will do his Jumping Head Smash or his Jumping Stomp attacks and hit Lion, but it won't count. Lion never attempts to recover, for some reason.

I keep watching the demonstration, and it doesn't make sense that the computer would use Lion to demonstrate the maneuver instead of Kage. I even attempted to do the maneuver as Lion, and still can't accomplish it.

I figure there's some dumb, tiny discrepency I'm overlooking here. If anyone could tell me what I am doing wrong, I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you for helping.

I've had the same problem, and I found the best way to do this is to just listen. If you hear the body crashing into the ground, just go for a heavy down attack. If you don't hear anything, don't bother doing anything. I know this isn't the proper way of doing it, so technically we're not learning anything, but it works if you only attack when you hear their body hit the floor.

I don't recall the exact wording the training mode gives, but I'm pretty sure you need to hold the direction and the button. So instead of inputting [7] you need to do [7_] and hold [P] at the same time.

The other important thing is that you must let the opponent hit the ground first. Even if you enter the correct input, if it's too early you will fail.

It's flawed. If your opponent does a really late tech roll, you can end up doing an empty pounce. And, if this happens in the training mode - it will register as a success.

Toturial says that by holding [7] and pressing [P] your character will perform down attack if opponent doesn't recover or will jump back when opponent performs tech roll. But sometimes holding [7] doesn't work and you get score even if you miss your down attack.

Just get used to the mechanics of jumping while holding [K] at any given time, and do the same thing with [P] right after the opponent hits the ground. The important thing is to hold both [P] and [7_]

Thanks guys, I finally nailed it. All I have to do now is master evading throw escape and I'll have Quest mode completed %100.

I have another question about another technique, but I see no reason to start another thread.

What constitutes as a guaranteed hit situation? The in-game tutorial has nothing on the subject, and the in-game guide is fairly ambiguous in its description.

if you're vanessa, any move that puts you at +10, sarah aoi and pai +11, jeff and wolf +13, everyone else +12. (those are each character's respective fastest attacks)

so if jeff does [6][K] against you, and you block with brad, you're guaranteed a [6][P][K] since jeff's [6][K] leaves him at -14 (and you at +14), any 14 frame attack or less will be guaranteed! (thus guaranteed hit situation)

    Not a bad question.

or to put it simply - you block an attack that takes so long to recover that your next hit is guranteed

Excellent. So, really, I should land guaranteed hits just through regular play, like guaranteed throws. Just a matter of time until the opportunities present themselves.

Thank you for your help, everyone.
