Here's basically how it works, Brian.

Put in your card, and press and hold P+K+G. You'll see a menu come up, asking if you want to transfer your data to a new card. At the bottom, there's "Yes" and "No" in Japanese, and you can choose with the lever and a button. I think No is highighted at the beginning for safety, so move the cursor to yes and press a button (if you push no, the menu will probably just go away).

At this point, the machine REMOVES the data from your old card, which takes a moment, and then after finishing, tells you to put in the new card.

This is where it gets ticky, and it's how both Joey and I lost our data (even though I've done it successfully in Japan a few times). Since as you know, the card readers glitch out sometimes, if it glitches out now, you're fucked /versus/images/icons/smile.gif.

Put the new card in, and it should just load the data on to it, and you're done. But, at AI both Joey and I got the "card read error" message when we put in our new cards, even after removing it and putting it back a couple times. Then the menu just vanished and we were screwed. It happened to him on the 1P side, me on the 2P side.

If you can, I'd do it when David, Joey, or someone who can read Japanese was there just to be safe (one of the guys at AI reads japanese, maybe he'll help you). You shouldn't have a problem, but be careful.

    Good Luck

    Bryan

hmm just as an observation, when the game trys to backup the data, you wouldnt suppose that its trying to update it to vfnet? Then when it trys to retrieve, it cant access vfnet so essentially the data is stored nowhere.

    just a theory . . .

I don't think so. The game knows it's not hooked up tp VF.net, as there's no vf.net icon in the lower left corner.

If being connected were a requirement, I don't think the game would prompt you to change the data when your card gets low on plays, or bring up the data change menu. Also, your character doesn't need to be registered with vf.net to exchange data.

I'm sure one of our players in Japan who frequents the board can provide more details and tips.... (???)
