    If you havent seen

    http://www.sega.com/valkyria/us/index.html

you should check it out; the movies are huge but worth downloading.

Makes JSRF look like an atari game.

Demo is up now on US and UK playstation store.

Retail release is out now - EPIC game! If you have any interest in RPGs, strategy games, or innovative gameplay / graphics, it's well worth a purchase.

English language strategy wiki now up at http://www.ValkyriaChronicles.org , still rough around the edges but it has the basic stats and such.

The art style reminds of Nausicaa and other Studio Ghibli stuff.

Not entirely sure, but I think alot of the staff that made the Sakura Taisen game series is making this game. Looking forward to the U.S. release.

    Oh Sega, oh Sega.

    Why did the Dreamcast fail?

It failed because they had no honor. Sony FTW! :p

Seriously I was saddened by the failure of the Dreamcast. So much so I refused to buy a PS2 for Virtua Fighter 4.

It also failed b/c the gaming press bought the nonsense that the PS2 was exponentially more powerful than the DC.

Look at Soul Caliber. It was an early game for the DC and how many PS2 games look way way better than that? If the DC had the same resources put into it in terms of extracting its full potential, what would the games have looked like? We'll never know.

    The controller was awful though.

Yeah it put me off buying a PS2 for a long time but Metal gear 2 and Virtua Fighter 4 were tempting me too much, so I gave in in the end.

    Funny that I ended up buying a PS3 for MGS4 and VF5 /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

    <s>Same engine than Eternal Sonata?</s>
No, scratch that. Eternal Sonata is way prettier.

The game is gorgeous. But, I think the Naruto PS3 project is the best one using the Cell Shading trick. Two different styles of course. The Water color effect is a nice touch to Valkrye.

yeah, the Naruto teaser trailer does look good. Although, it's naruto . . .

Like akai pointed out, Valkyria looks like someone animated the concept sketches for the Nausicaa manga; the muted watercolor tones & sketch filter imho look really, really good. Whether you like the look or not, it's quite different from other cel-shaded games.

From mag scans i've seen looks like at least one of the ex-sakura taisen producers worked on it, dunno if the rumors about the phantasy star char designer being involved are true though. Supposedly hitoshi sakimoto did the soundtrack as well.

Probably the first next-gen game besides vf5 that i'm honestly excited about.

I might actually import the game(Region Free PS3 baby!) Just to check it out. I wonder how the music is going to be for this game.

I already had pretty high expectations, and if the demo is any indication, the game will be even better than I thought.

Played the demo through about 7 times last night, each time a different strategy. Aside from the unique graphics, it's a very good mix of realtime / turn-based tactics with 3rd person action.

The old SEGA is back, if you own a PS3 and you don't buy this, you're part of the problem!

Music is by Hitoshi Sakimoto. See FF XII and Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Odin Sphere. While I've definitely heard plenty of his signature sounds lately, still a very talented composer. Glad he signed on for this.

Checked out the demo this week.

Shining Force 2 was that last strat rpg I enjoyed, Disgaea's levelling madness is rather off-putting and so is the massive management FFtactics entails. It seems Sega created a game based around those original ideas of less is more, no chartbased number madness, just a couple of different unit and weapon types and rock paper scissor them out against one another.

    Yay!

I really wonder if people from the original Shining team were in on this one.

AFAIK Camelot developed the "real" shining games, and they are mostly in Nintendo's pocket these days (wii love golf, golden sun).

This team seems to be ex-members of Overworks (phantasy star, skies of arcadia).

If shining II was the last strat rpg you enjoyed, you should really play fire emblem. Very much a less-is-more, rock-paper-scissors type of series.

Valkyria Chronicles ships to retailers in North America

Sega has announced that Valkyria Chronicles, arguably the company’s most-anticipated RPG in like forever, has now shipped to retailers.

Anyone with a PS3 get it yet?

I read in fine print no KoDs are allowed to purchase this.

If I had cash atm, I'd buy this with the quickness. Part of me doesn't want to rent it either, just hold off till I -can- buy it. Cause I'd really like to support both SEGA and this type of game.

Lol, apparently the idiot gamestop employees read that fine print too, cause they acted like they had NO IDEA what the game was when I called to check if my preorder was in.

"hey you got valkyria chronicles in yet?"
    "huh?"
    "valkyria chronicles"
    "what?"
    "val - kyr - ee - uh cuh - ron - ick - uhls"
    "uh lemme go check"
    5 mins later
    "what system is that for?"
    "ps3"
    "oh, you mean playstation 3?"

How are you gonna work at a gamestop and not know what valkyria chronicles is, much less what a "Pee Ess Three" is . . .

Fuck gamestop, i'm never buying anything from them again. Not that I'm gonna have time to play it today anyway.

Republican beatdown, release of the best sega RPG since forever == my best wedding anniversary yet /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
