    EDIT
it occurs to me that my revelation my not be worth an entire thread so i figure if anyone else wants to complain/talk about something Vanessa does/doesnt they can..

i love Vanessa but her reversals arent versatile enough and i cant finish her dojo at all. plus im not so good with long combos and i cant seem to break other pps combos with the moves i can pull off with her.. Akira on the other hand...

i kinda discovered that Akira is much better for my 'style' of play (and it makes me very sad).. i like Vanessa much better because
    1. shes got some great combos including some awesome takedowns
    2. i love having stances and the option to change-up mid fight
    3. i love girls, girls, girls, girls. Girls i do ADORE!

unfortunately i rarely use anything over a 4 or 5 hit sequence because i prefer to use short, choppy moves until i get a launch and/or use a wall.. Akira is chop-chop city, less commitment and more punishment..

i also like 'power' moves than stun, stagger, or knockdown and opponent in one or two strikes and Akira seems to do that more than Vanessa does (or at least i pull it off more often with him).

Vanessa will be my primary character so Ill still be harassing you all about Vanessa's moves. i have to add Akira to my playlist cause ive topped out on what i can do with Vanessa without a tutor, a hori or at least a fully functional controller (LB and LT have lost sensitivity, Y sticks for some reason and i dont know whats up with my D pad!)

Is aAkira not much harder to use on a pad than Vanessa?

    oh of course!

akira's more difficult moves are nearly impossible on the controller i have but the basic stuff is soo much more effecive for the way i play..

i need to stagger or knock ppl down wit 1 or 2 hits cause i dont do long strings most of the time.. plus i can break my opponents combos much better cause im already using the right moves..

with Vanessa im fighting my own natural tendencies to learn a totally different fighting style. its much easier for me personally to fight in a choppy fashion with a character that already does strong moves in 2 or 3 hit combos than panic and button mash..

im already invested in Vanessa's quest and i like her too much to give up but i gotta find a way to beat my friend silent9ight on xbl without breaking another tv.. broke the last one just Practicing to fight him..

(he kicks my ass a lot.. i think thats why he likes fighting me so much)

    DS [3] [P] + [K] not a power move?
    OS [4] [3] [P] + [K] not a POWER MOVE?

What about her DS sidekick reversal, her OS flying knee, her [4] [P], her [K] + [G] !!! SFX: **WELL HEEYAH HOOOMPH TAKE THAT**

Seriously, i don't think any other character has moves that seems to HURT that much, apart from wolf's wall throw where he chops you in the neck like three times (YEAH). Akira might have single strikes, but power moves compared to vane? :ROTFL: He seems like a ballerina to me, with his silly [K] and all the dancing around.

Talk about difference in tastes

PS: yeah, sorry for feeding this thread, fanboy reflexes :( RedSonRising, don't worry, ask away, Jeneric and Sebo are really active in the forums, you'll get all the feedback on vanessa gameplay you want.

Jeneric and Sebo have been really helpful already.. Vane (i say Nessa but noone seems to get that) is awesome and she's got some great stuff (and yes Akira is a prissy bastard) but im just not as effective with her..

    Nessa vs silent9ight/pai - 5 wins / 12 losses
    Akira vs silent9ight/pai - 7 wins / 2 losses

    gotta go with the numbers

Pai gives me great trouble too - let's exchange tips shall we?

Since i can't reverse some of her key moves i try to start the round from OS. [6] [P] + [K] beats almost everything she can open the round with (punches being the notable exception). [6] [6] [P] stops her slower stuff. A Pai player will undoubtedly use her evade + [P] + [K] move to deter you from using fast linear moves, so some throw mixups are required. When she tries to do her low stance don't [9] [K] + [G] like i do, vane flies over her :( I try to use [3] [K] [K] in those situations. I lose though, mostly to WR [6] [P]. Lancers don't work either, i get counterhit all the time.

So i switch to DS. At least i don't eat that combo cause vane's [3] [P] beats her rising double punch after a low punch. [G]+[3] [9] [P] works good against her linear strikes - most pai players rely on them cause they have decent frames on block. If she tries to distance you, don't rush with [6] [6] [K], her weird flipkick thing has some crazy hitbowes and usually beat you. When she goes into her low stance [3] [K] her for some crouch stagger (contrary to OS [4] [K], the sidekick from this stance doesn't go over her head). If your opponent has good reflexes and sidesteps you, [P] + [K] *delay* [P] works miracles. If she gives you too much pressure and you want to push her awa, try [6] [P] strings. You'll get sabakied from DS though :(

All in all i'm convinced that agaisnt pai, vanessa is better off playing from OS but i just can't seem to pull it off.

I say stick with Nessa. Just try to get better and become more informed. Don't judge your character based on performance against one player. Nessa's great.

I'm new to VF and I can finish her Dojo stuff, but that doesn't mean anything. Check her boards and her wiki stuff. You'll pull through.

OOOOH nice, i didn't know that, i just switched to OS instinctively against those exact characters - thanks for the confirmation  In fact, i always found it kinda weird i did better with DS against shun, even though i have to rush down on him.

Won't work. You can't space Pai. Seriously, hopckicks, flipckicks, that long range high kick, all have crazy hitboxes and will beat vane's mids. At least that's what's happening to me.

True, now let me slug you with one IRL and then you tell me it's not a power move ;) I was just referring to the animations being rough and violent, not the actual game effectiveness - afterall there's a DS reversal just below :X3:

my fighting game skills have always been suspect.. the difference between what i think, what i do, and what happens are pretty dramatic sometimes.. watching the inputs in the dojo are depressing.. i think im grabbing after the mid kick and finishing with a knee, but im not.. im not even doing the right move half the time..

i guess im the classic panic button masher.. if i cant accidentally pull off some fancy moves they dont happen on their own.. ive played at least 3 hours in normal quest mode with vanessa, warrior status, 200+ wins and 12 or 13 losses.. i do the same 4 or 5 moves/combos over and over.. limited success.

had some minor success against 9ight with pai tonight but he was (obviously) going easy on me most of the time.. i know this cause he said 'just have fun, im not tryin that hard.' i get frustrated pretty fast..

im totally biased towards OS when im vanessa tho.. when im in DS i get confused and use OS moves and end up gettin destroyed a lot.. im not confident enough to online and not break another tv so imma stick to quest mode till i feel like vanessa is ready for ranked matches..

DS and Akira are like mates, kinda. [wonder what Vanessa and Akira's kids would look like... hmm... ^_^]

Both use large hits. Both can counter very well. Both use shorter combo strings. And both Sabaki like no tommorow. Only DS has full circular moves that make Akira cry...

    I too have Akira as my main and Vanessa as my sub. I've retired Aoi. I like watching Vanessa more... [rraawwwr] Too bad there's only DoA doujins and VF doesn't exist... ;_;

Are there any 'incentive moves' for OS cause each time I use OS online, even though I know most of it's useful techniques and fakes, my chances for winning seem to go DOWN significantly... DS seems to be just that much better?

we should challenge each other in an invite unranked match. my xbl tag is "Yukinari Sasaki" [yes, spell it just like that sans quotes]

The general oppinion around here is that DS is better, and I recall reading somewhere around here that you should only switch into OS for a trick or two...possibly as apart of your continuous offense. Though personally, even though DS seems nicer with it's wtf broken moves( /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, (hold /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif)

I like the strings in OS a little better. Plus she has a safe(with proper fuzzy guarding)and quick launcher ( /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif) that also makes me like OS more. I realize that I'm most certainly in the minority on that one.

I still begin my offense in DS most of the time. It's just a heck of a lot easier to sabaki an opponents attack to get them on the defensive than it is to cut into with a quick attack.

I second that. If I win my first two rounds in DS I'd change to OS in the third just for kicks (no pun intended) and I would always have a much harder time winning it or -what's worse- I would lose that round most times. I really like OS because of the more interesting moves but I find myself going back to DS if I need to make sure I'd win that round.

I prefer to stick in OS. I win the equal ammount of rounds and matches in either, but I like the methodical approach alot more and OS is definently methodical.

im finding that i use DS more and more.. i love OS but im starting to feel more comfortable with her DS combos..

im still venturing out and using other characters and its gettin easier to learn combos.. so far ive started game data on Akira and Pai. havent done much with Pai yet but Akira looks promising..

i seem to pick characters that i like, not necessarily characters that i can with with or learn easily.. not a good thing for a guy that gets extremely frustrated very quickly with fighting games..

No problem here at all, man. Those characters that you like will be the ones that you stick with the longest, and eventually you'll have that one character that you run to when the going gets really tough. Usually that's what happens eventually.

    As usual i'd like to support Sebo but that's kinda of an oversimplification. DS [2] [K] CH [P] is stance-dependant, [6] [P] + [K][P] weight-dependant, [4] [6] [P] + [K] too (wolf=lol), even [4] [6] [K] CH [P] whiffs sometimes, [1] [K] + [G] and WR [K] whiff at long range and I don't even try [8] [K] anymore...

Vane's DS crumbles, yes, hella easy. Her DS floats and slams? Not necesserily easier than her OS ones.
