Sega has said all along that its not technically possible to put VF on line because of the network bandwith and lag would create a game that wouldn't be VF.

    What's changed?

There haven't been any drastic changes in Internet protocols.

If VF couldn't be brought to the Internet in 2004,2005,2006, what's different now?

If its technically possible today then it was technically possible in 2005.

What's the real story behind the change in direction?

Was there a management change at Sega?

Is there something drastic about to change with Internet protocols that Sega has wind of and we don't?

Doesn't this change in direction introduce more credibility problems 4 Sega?

It's technically possible to make an approximation that will be a lot of fun.

This was already covered in the big thread. There was an article. It basically said "Well, we were surprised that the fans want VF online even though there will be lag. So many want it, we decided to do it."

No problem with that. I'm sure it will be fun. But wouldn't that have been true in 2004,2005,and 2006.

    What's changed?

I'm sure you're aware of a dozen or so interviews where the folks at Sega were dead set against online because of network bandwith, reaction time, lag time, etc. We are playing on the same Internet today that we were 2 years ago.

    What's the real story?

There has got to be something that we're not being told. Somebody out there must have the scoop.

"Well we were surprised". That just doesn't seem to ring true. So many of the VF fans have been asking for online play for so long. I find it hard to believe that Sega is "surprised " that people want online play.

Plague do you believe that "surprise" or are you just citing the interview?

I think you're probably right. There's probably a healthy dose of politics with Namco taking Tekken online.

And I think any developments/refinements that will inevitably be learned by Namco could leave Sega behind in the market if they didn't?

Masterpo and the Attention Whoring Controversy

Notice the big text at the end of the sentence. It is key. It also exposes that your continued participation in this thread is a ploy for getting attention. There is no bandwidth controversy. Sega was surprised people wanted VF online with lag.

They wouldn't say anything else publicly though would they?

Do they require basic physics in highschool anymore?

Bandwith is, for all intents and purposes, completely irrelevant. A 56k modem has enough bandwith to handle the amount of information required for a fighting game.

The issue is latency. You can't decrease latency beyond a base level, without making Einstein roll over in his grave. You can come up with clever ways to try and hide it, like takebacks (read: Oh, I nailed that TKoD! WTF? Why am I suddenly being thrown out of it?), but nothing has changed about the speed of light between February and now.

What has changed? Fat sacks of cash.

Fat sacks of cash., That makes sense. The Namco online strategy as a catalyst also makes sense. Tekken DDR,6, SC4 online competition makes sense. Why not just say that. It would be more credible to say we have to keep up or ahead of the competition than to say. "We're just now realizing that the VF fanboys will play VF online <span style='font-size: 20pt'>even with a LAG</span>' That's intellectually dishonest

And for all of you have read the many interviews with various AM2 folks and the response they always gave when online play was mentioned. You know that its not the case that Sega is just now realizing that some VFers are willing to play even with a <span style='font-size: 17pt'>Lag</span>. The folks that have wanted online play have been ready to accept that from the very beginning. That's nothing new.

    On the other hand.

    Microsoft's money "That's new"
Tekken DDR,6 online capability That's new
SC4 is supposed to have online capability and That's new

As some have said in this and the other post, these might be the real reasons behind the change in strategy and direction as opposed to the flimsy We're surprised that so many fans are willing to play even <span style='font-size: 17pt'>with a Lag</span>"

If its not the competition, or the fat sacks of cash (And those make the most sense) then there has have been a changing of the guard somewhere!

I just wish Sega would tell the truth. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

You don't have to be a real life Sherlock Holmes to work out Sega's motives here?

Do you honestly expect a game company or any company in the "business of business" to be honest?

    I'm sorry but LOFL /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

    Sega lies.

    Big deal.

Just because they make the fighting game you love doesn't mean you have to be best buddies.

Jeneric is totally right. We may never find out untill years down the road when online lag free fighting games are the norm, and they do a tv special on the start of online fighting games.

You're correct. Obviously I could make some guesses along the lines of:

    Tekken DDR,6 will be online
    SC4 will be online
DOA for PS3 will be online (yep)
Sony is making a major committment to online strategy
Microsoft probably provided a big #@! financial incentive

My intention in starting this thread was to see if anybody out there that claim to have insider connection actually knew what
    the truth was.

And for all of you that don't have a problem with lies or have become accustomed to lying, I must apologize, I still prefer to hear the truth when I can get it. And I expect truth from myself and my peeps.

And since Sega has the best damn fighting game on the planet they don't have to lie.

As the monk of VFDC it is my obligation to remind all of you:

Only simple and quiet words will ripen of themselves.
For a whilrwind does not last a whole morning.
Nor does a sudden shower last a whole day.
How much truer is it of the rash endeavours of men?

    Hence, he who cultivates the Tao is one with the Tao;
    He who practices Virtue is one with Virtue;

And he who courts after Loss is one with Loss.

Deficiency of faith on your part
Entails faithlessness on the part of others.
When you are lacking in faith, others will be
    unfaithful to you.

Recognize that all words are part false, and part truth. Limited by our imperfect understanding. But strive always for honesty, within yourself. To surppress a truth is to give it force beyond endurance.

Wow Masterpo you talk some top class bollox. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Look at every review of ps3 vf5, they said it was a shame they didnt include online play. So now with this version they thought it a good idea to include it to boost sales. Maybe it's as simple as that or maybe there is some deep conspiracy with the net code being altered that we need some insider scoop about. Sorry to be boring but I think it's the former.

    Rayne, Kod,

    Its all in fun...

Anything that increases semi-serious to serious VFers is kewl,

Its just that Sega speakth with forked tongue, I thought some insider on these boards might have the truth, just curious.
Rayne perhaps you're right, its probably just that simple.
