Can anyone tell me what I'm missing as far as getting 1st grade with Akira? There isn't much info on the web and I'm using one found at www.gamefaqs.com but even with meeting all criteria I can only get 2nd grade.

I know about the Japanese mode 15th dan with Akira but that's not what I'm talking about. I can't even get 9th dan (1st grade).

Is there something special I should be doing?

Yep that's the one. I can do it with Jacky but not Akira.

    you're playing with 2.0 or 2.1?

I'm not sure but something keeps tickling at my grey matter here - does anyone (rich) remember if 2.0 had a bug that disallowed you to reach top rank with a certain character(s)?

arcade 2.0 had a bug where shun could never reach top rank. i forget why, exactly. something to do with points for a certain move never registering. i don't recall if this was fixed for the saturn version or even arcade 2.1 (probably was on both counts).

annnnnnd i just actually read the faq linked and it's right in there. durrrr.

can't help much beyond that, i never really bothered with ranking mode because the vf2 AI is the most infuriating AI in the fucking universe.

The AI is infuriating indeed. There is really no way to defeat it by normal means, at least in expert mode, without using the throw trick. I remember figuring this out early on when it came out. Either throw right when you just entered range of being able to, or hop toward the computer and throw the moment you land.

There are other tricks of course, like jumping from far away and using the early descending kick, but that only works on certain characters.

As for my original question... can no one help? I've gotten 2nd grade with Akira about twenty times now and am doing everything on the list.

it could be that the list itself is wrong.

the only CPU characters I have an issue with on Expert Mode are Wolf and Akira. and Akira is very easily (in 2.0) dealt with because you have the KG bug.

In fact, I'm nearly positive the list is wrong.

I just went into ranking mode, did his stumble throw and rang myself out. 3 technical points.

played again, just ran myself out. no technical points. I think you need to include his other throws, including P+G and get a max damage palm as well.

I was thinking the same thing about the P+G throws. And I'm surprised that the double palm isn't a requirement. When you say max damage palm are you referring to the single palm?

yeah. SE, crouch dash into single palm is the easiest way.

I have VF2 point list if you guys want. I'm not able to post here since it's written by Japanese.

I'm going to post Akira's point list from the Japanese VF2 mook. While I can read, speak, and write Japanese, kanji isn't my forte. However, I matched up the kanji with the move list and everything I'm trying to do seems correct but there is one spot that doesn't make sense to me which might be the P+G stuff. I'll try to do this tonight.

By the way, does anyone remember an American mook for VF2? I swear I had one but can't remember. Am I crazy? I just seem to remember looking up information in english way back in 1994, but maybe I'm wrong.

I wish there was a way to scan the book without ruining it. What I mean is the best scans would obviously be if I tore every page apart. I'll see what I can do.

Do you know how many different mooks there were?

I think there were three mooks but I am unsure.

I totally get what you mean about destroying the mooks. when I scanned in items from the more recent books I was always afraid of every page coming away from the spine.

They're tougher than you'd think but no worries if you never get to it. I might just grab some from eBay and then cut em up to archive them.

yeah there was, i have that mook, but i believe it was for VF1 (pretty decent too!), not VF2, ill have to check, i think it was by "zentai" (i could be dead wrong...)

regarding the ranking mode, i have this videos of every character getting their top rank, including of course akira, but im not sure if its based on 2.1.

i keep telling myself one day ill rip all these VF tapes i have (GE is gonna kill me! :D)

The VF1 mook was published by Kanzen. Our own L_A Akira had a hand in that book. Really quite nice, actually - I saw that in a convenience store and had to get it and it prompted me to write my own guide for VF1 (which has surprising depth...the game, not the guide). I waited and waited for a VF2 guide but to no avail. so sad.

and yes, Sal, I will kill you.

I just confirmed this by finding a really cool website: http://www.jap-sai.com/Search.htm

They have original Japanese flyers, soundtracks, VHS videos, mooks, etc., for many Japanese arcade and home console games. Under the VF2 section they even have 3 VHS tapes and sound pretty interesting. One of these is the one I'm sure you're talking about Sudden_Death. I still wish you'd post the VF3TB video where it shows all the differences between VF3 and VF3TB!! This website didn't seem to have anything like that in the VF3 category.
