it's been discussed, but I can see where you might have trouble finding it.

    In a nutshell:

no, vf4 evo will probably not use the network adapter. There's too many problems playing a game as timing and reflex-dependent as VF over a network, a little bit of lag can mess up your game completely. And there's no way to eliminate that little bit of lag.

dude, don't feel like you're being singled out. This forum can sometimes be a bit "cold." Anyway, I see you're new to the forum. I'd just like to welcome you to this awesome forum to discuss your VF concerns, and for your future contribution to the VF knowledge base here.

That would be so cool if VF: Evolution was online. Testing your skills against unknown players all around the world is not only full of competition but its awfly fun!

Even if it was laggy and imperfect, I'd so buy a network adapter just to play VF4 evo online.

Well, from what I hear on SRK, CVS2 EO Online on the Xbox Live has been doing pretty well, despite the lag issues. Things like parrying are rather unreliable, and many players are relearning the game (to adapt to the lag), but things have been generally positive from what I hear (I don't own an Xbox, so I wouldn't know first hand).

Ah, but Sony (along with IBM), does have very ambitious online gaming plans:

Technology wise, this thing should blow Xbox Live (and any other current online gaming environment), out of the water.

That's what was said about PlayOnline, as well - and just look at what a disaster it's been for Square. They can't even afford to set up US-based servers for FFXI.

I loved FFX, and I respect Square for their creative abilities, but I think they tend to be poor business managers. I mean, how long did it take them to recycle characters. That's a pretty fundamental concept in marketing. I mean, we like VF4, partially, because over the years, we've grown fond of Akira, Pai, Kage, Wolf.. etc. New characters are always welcome (you are very welcome, Aoi and Vanessa /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif ), but the return of the old ones are part of the draw. I mean how many incarnations did Ryu/Ken have? .. geeez. And Square has finally realized this brain dead concept, after 10 iterations of FF. Good grief. And I won't even get into the commercial failure that was The Spirits Within (which, I've enjoyed as well).

Anyway, if Square had any business sense, they'd have known that FFXI would have a relatively small user base (a bulk of the FF fans prefer offline, I believe), and that the technology that they are using, failed utterly for its original users (namely, Dreamcast). So why the heck is Square banging on this thing.. I have no idea.

Anyhow, this new Sony/IBM thing is a completely different technology. It's distributed computing- not individual server based as with all of the current popular online gaming platforms. That means, first of all, you have quite a few failsafe points, so that the failure of a part of the system means little to the entire system overall, and that your gameplay will not be limited to a given server at a time. It's nothing new, but it hasn't been applied to online gaming as of yet (I don't know why).

So will VF4:Evo go online? Prob not. I don't think this thing will be ready until PS3. And any sort of online stuff for PS2 is retrofitting at best.

Square held off so long on recycling characters because the original concept behind series was that each game would be "final" - i.e. the storyline and characters are unique and complete and self-contained within each game. So that's the origin of the name and square's reluctance to recycle characters. I applaud them for holding out so long and wish they hadn't broken with that tradition.

I agree with you that FF the movie was a bad idea. I mourn all the incredible time and effort that went into a new set of characters, a storyline, and most especially pretty graphics... it was wasted on 2 hours of medicore entertainment instead of a solid eighty hours of fun in the next FF game. Now they're forced to recoup the waste of cash and talent by becoming more formulaic, which is something fans already were complaining about (now we're gonna get the same old gameplay system AND the same characters).

Thx for the info- FFX was my first FF. Interestingly enough, I bought FFX, largely because my female counterpart and I went to see The Spirits Within, and we fell in love with the graphics (the rest of the film is pretty much garbage, as you know). Btw, I've noticed that they used the same 'hair algorithm' on Yuna's hair as they did on whathername's hair in TSW, among other things- so there is some positive code reuse there.

Anyway, well, I guess one can respect them for sticking to their principles, but I'd rather have a talented bunch like Square, to not be teetertottering on the line of bankruptcy most of the time.
