Awesome. I like the sound of that ranking system...

  4. what do you expect VF5 always gets good ratings, as does Tekken and Soul Caliber. But VF is my favorite of the 3

Sorry to say that but the official Xbox magazine is not biased. They are independent from Microsoft and bashing bad Xbox titles, and failures of Microsoft all day in their magazine and their fabulous Official Xbox Magazine Podcast.

And the PS3 versions metacritic included single format Playstation media.
    So whats your point again?

Just rather have Reviews that are not tied to particular consoles up. Didn't mean to start a debate but guess I should have known better.

I've come to find that every virtua fighter review says the exact same thing. They warn you that there is a deep learning curve, but enough easy stuff that anyone can pick up and have a fun match. And you can't read a review without reading that, "You get what you put into it," phrase. I'm still pretty excited about picking this game up tomorrow though.

I really wonder why Gamespot & Co. haven't already reviewed VF5. They must have gotten a pre-release version for reviewing purposes beforehand, actually. And even if they hadn't gotten one, it's about time for them to review this masterly done porting of Virtua Fighter 5 (Live) to the 360.

    From the IGN review.......

"The VF series is not for casual gamers who want something that's easy to pick up and play; VF is for those willing to dedicate themselves to learning the fighting system."

    What the hell..........

Way to go IGN. Let's turn off more people who play videogames to the VF series.

Another gem from the IGN review:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">While I agree that it is not the type of fighter you can easily pick up and play, this is a game less about skill and more about time investment</div></div>
I hope that was a typo, but something tells me it wasn't. Games that are less skill and more time investment remind me of MMOs.

It would have been better if it read:

While I agree that it is not the type of fighter you can easily pick up and play, time invested in honing your skills will ultimately be rewarding.

... or something like that. In other words, the reviewer shouldn't separate skill with time investment.

    Then there was:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The fighting engine is unquestionably strong. But there are many areas where, unfortunately, Virtua Fighter 5 proves lacking.</div></div>
The reviewer says there are "many areas .. lacking" but only mentions two: the arenas are still "rectangular" (heh) and the AI is "highly suspect". A reviewer to complain about stages and the AI (I thought it was much improved for the 360 anway?) doesn't really understand the direction and intent of the series.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The most glaring issue remains the presentation. Though VF5 has some incredible visuals, the interface (particularly for Quest Mode) seems two generations old.</div></div>
Two generations? Ouch. The only reason for this negative comment given is the match commentary....... *sigh*

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">On Microsoft's monster machine, you get clean lines, excellent lighting, and some great environmental effects (such as mist rolling through the arena).</div></div>
Apart from the "clean lines" (which are arguable) that aren't really quantified in any way, you get the other stuff on the PS3 too.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The online options are barebones and not quite on par with what we've seen from recent online fighters.</div></div>
The reviewer laments the omission of an online tournament option, and that it's not in a Quest Mode-like interface, but fails to mention all the XBL Achievements available. I know there's no lobby, but is it really that barebones? Does it not serve its purpose well?

This review was confusing. It got a good score, and the reviewer has no problem in mentioning how great the game is in the introduction and conclusion. But all throughout the review I just got a sense that the reviewer was disappointed for reasons the average fighting gamer wouldn't care less about?

A case of the glass being half-empty.

The IGN reviews are usualy fair to middling at best. While I enjoy the high score they gave the game, to Myke's point, many of the statements made didnt make a whole lot of sense and were clearly stated by somebody who obviously hasn't spent a fair amount of time with the series outside of his review copy of VF5. Having fond memories of walking into an arcade when VF1 came out playing what everybody called the "robot fighting game", to sitting down with my brand new Saturn in May of 95 with VF1 in my face until 2 came out later that year, etc, etc...I think I'm just old and jaded /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I suppose its a good thing that VF never ceases to amaze me with every iteration.

I think she meant from a "Quest Mode" perspective.

Yeah, from watching my 7 year old daughter having a blast playing Pai in Quest Mode, I have to agree that's off base. I don't think Hilary is intensionally trying to turn people off though, it's simply an unfortunate turn of phrase from a hardcore fan (which he obviously is) trying to emphasize how deep the game is.
