please add your gamertag here if you would like to find other players specifically for training sessions.

some people only like to play competatively while others want to learn from others in a structured fashion ...this thread is aimed at the latter.

do you want to learn how to:

throw escape,
guard break,
struggle,
evade,
tech roll,
fall recover,
evade throw escape guard,
fuzzy guard,
learn max damage combos
....

or any other element of vf5 please sign up here and find yourself a dojo partner! also include your location and the areas you'd like to practice.

to help fascilitate a practice session select 60 seconds with 5 rounds when creating a lobby.

couple of pointers to help you and your partner practice:

throw escapes - basic - the protocol here should be for player 1 to initiate a single /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif followed immediately by the throw. this lets player 2 know when the throw is coming to attempt the escape, and avoids player 2 throwing player 1 by accident.

structure your drills in such a way that you're building up complexity. start with drills of 10 throws each that you must escape with player 1 informing player 2 which throw they will initiate. build this up into more difficult throws and finally practice multiple throw escapes where playe 1 can perform any throw he likes.

Oioron's suggested drill: Put yourself in a situation when a throw-attempt is guaranteed. Any move that is -12 or worse. Have your opponent block and throw you afterwards. This can also be set-up in Dojo mode. In -12 or worse situations the only thing you can really do defensively is TE, since your opponent will have a guaranteed counter. Once you get the timing down, it's best to move on to throw-escape guard, this will avoid throw attempts and non-guaranteed attacks that your opponent may try.

low throws escapes - player 2 starts the drill crouched. player 1 throws a single /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif then peforms the low throw. player 2 attempts the escape. perform 10 then switch over.

Oioron's suggestion: Most people fail to low-throw escape during specific set-ups. For example, Jeffry's Hell Stab ( /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif ) to Machine Gun knee lift ( /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif ). So I suggest have your sparring partner use similar set-ups.

evades - for basic evading practice find a slow linear attack with some range and perform drills of 10 evades each. next move onto directional evades from each side by performing half circulars. finally practice evading from defense or disadvantage - player 1 throws a basic ppk string which player 2 blocks. player 2 then counter attacks. player 1 must evade the counter attack.

evade throw escape ETE & throw escape guard TEG - practice each in turn. player 1 throws a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, player 2 blocks it then sets up a 50% guessing game by either attacking or throwing. player 2 must ETE/TEG to avoid the attacks. x10 before swapping.

guard breaks - player 2 holds himself in a standing block. player 1 performs a guard break and attempts to inflict follow up damage. player 2 must struggle and block the follow up attack. x10 then swap.

fall recover - drills of 10 practicing perfect fall recovery from a throw...then move onto recovery from knockdowns and finally tech rolls.

max damage combos - its's all very well performing max damage combos in the dojo on a static opponent..a different matter during the pressure of a real fight. a good excercise here is to try your combos after a sucessfull evade. to practice this have player 1 perform a ranged linear attack..player 2 must evade the attack and initiate a float starter into the max damage combo. player 2 must see how many perfect combos he can perform out of 10. then swap over.

learn each character's combos by playing against them, useful for learning how to reverse. Better learning then actually playing with them.

I think this is a great idea. Some combos/strings (DLC/SpoD/Basara comes to mind) I can pull offline, but the timing is so sensitive on some of the juggles/slam combos that I can't seem to pull them off online.

I don't agree with the methods that were proposed. I think it's better to learn the defensive techniques early on by knowing when they should be used.

Here are my suggestions:

Throw-escapes: Put yourself in a situation when a throw-attempt is guaranteed.

Most people fail to low-throw escape during specific set-ups. For example, Jeffry's Hell Stab (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif) to Machine Gun knee lift (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif). So I suggest have your sparring partner use similar set-ups.

Anyways, when I'm on-line I'll be more than happy to show you how to train. (Although it's harder now since AM2 took out the recording feature/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif)

thanks, good suggestions, i've added them to the start of the thread. i don't think there's a definitive way to practice (right or wrong) but if we compile everyone's ideas into a training guide at the start of the thread people can pick and choose the drills they like.

so if you discover a great training drill with your partner please post here and i'll add it.
