Thanks, that was really insightful, I always wondered if FV was going to get a third installment, I love that game and would play it if I still had it and, I know I aint alone on this one, Fighters Megamix. I think Sega should do another Fighter's Megamix but this time with some other crossover characters from some other fighting game or even anime, whatever, just make it fun and put the Virtua Fighters up against something new. I still wish that they had went through with the VF RPG that I heard about back in the days.

There are big differences between fighting games designed for the arcade and those designed for the home. Arcade games need to have finely tuned balance between the character strengths - you can't have one character stronger than the others. This is very difficult to accomplish, and presents a lot of restrictions and challenges for the developers. Console games, though, focus more on immediate enjoyability rather than balance. Soul Calibur and DoA fall into this category.

The biggest problem is the time lag when executing techniques. VF runs at 60 frames per second, and every frame is important. We could make adjustments to eliminate lag, but if we did that, there would be no difference in the timing of the various moves, and the competitive aspect of the game would be ruined. We ran some tests in-house with simulated lag, but it wound up feeling like a completely different game!

Yes, I have played it. I really don't know what to think of it. It's interesting, but there are elements in the game that I find unsettling. I don't like being able to kill innocent people without any consequences.

The article is very interesting, that's for sure, but it's a very sad, realistically fitting title for the feature, "Last arcade crusaders". Soul Cali III came out on home consoles before stepping foot in the arcades, as well as other games. I just hope the fact that Nintendo has recently entered the fray, Namco-Bandai merger made Namco larger (and hopefully they stay in the arcade market, what am I kidding, of course they will!); and Sega has survived. Oh, and lets not forget the Bemani series. Now, all we need is Capcom to release a new SF or Alpha....

1UP: What do you think of the upcoming generation of console systems? How about the portable consoles (DS and PSP)?

HK: One impression I have is that making software for the PS3 and X360 will be much more difficult.

I'm surprised no one picked this quote up. With the current lack of information on whether we'll be able to enjoy an arcade version of VF5 in North America, this above statement worries me about the version that we all anticipate to see on the PS3 or whatever.
