VF5Online: Is "One-And-Done" a good thing?

Recently, I've been rethinking my original reaction to VF5 Online's "one-and-done" matchmaking system. (Meaning, you only get one match against a random opponent and then have to either add that person to your Friends List--which I'm running out of room for--or hope to get a random rematch.) Originally, I hated this form of play. I would have much rather had a matchmaking system not unlike DOA, where you can at least wait in line for a rematch, arcade-style, or make a private match so you don't have to wait at all.)

While I'm still lamenting the lack of choice, I don't see it as so much of a bad thing anymore. For one thing, it's forced me to adapt faster and to keep my emotions (meaning my temper) in check. I only have one shot at victory, so I can't afford to act stupid or let my anger blind me.

On that level, it's been very helpful.

So, out of boredom, I thought I'd ask how everyone else felt about it. Thanks in advance.

Adapting was a really big problem I had because I always played the same locals around me right. The randomness of the online battles has taught me a lot about how to fight someone and using each round as a stepping stone for learning the kinks in my opponents armor.

I also wish I could fight players who were on the same level as me over and over again. I don't mean that in an elite way I just like fighting people who challenge me and whom I also challenge back. It makes a win so much more gratifying and a loss not as disheartening.

I find player matches more rewarding for this reason. I win against many opponents in ranked games (even opponents who are probably "better" and more experienced than I am) using Eileen parlor tricks. My ranked record is really good but I don't find the games nearly as valuable as player matches where (after a series of battles) my opponent and I are able to adjust and adapt. It makes for more dynamic fighting, imo.

That's why I play about a 10:1 ratio of player matches to ranked matches. I know it's one and done in the arcade (and I can respect that kind of pressure) but I feel like I learn more by playing, say, LA Akira's Shun 20 matches in a row rather than him beating my ass to the ground once in ranked with me left scratching my head afterward.

That's true. As I said, One-and-Done has kinda help me find an opponent's weaknesses (and realize my own) faster, but there are plenty of cases where I've lost handily and thought to myself, "What the hell just happened?" In those cases, a rematch (or a way of recording matches) would be welcome.

defiantly a replay option would be great. I've debated with myself just recording all my online matches with my camera and sorting through for the good ones.

    Laziness is my greatest enemy.

one and done angers me cause ill be trying to play with a friend and we have to exit out just to switch characters. I also hope they come out with an update for your config saving. Every match i play I have to host because it gives me default config which i dont prefer.

floodnhard configure the player 2 buttons aswell. if you end up on the p2 position online you use the p2 configuration.

Online with this game is garbage. The stupid "unable to join" error is freaking dumb aand frustrating as all hell. Aint nothing like waiting 30 seconds to join a match only to get the "unable to join" message. Its stupid!

This wouldn't happen if everyone online knew how to open up his router ports, or hell just throw your 360 into a DMZ

Dude, I remember the dark days before Online VF. Back then a guy would have to go to seedy, dangerous places like south Jersey just to get a game.

At first, I didn't like the one shot matches either. Now, however, I actually prefer it. The only thing I worry about is accidentally challenging someone that I just beat in a ranked match because I don't usually host. I accidentally did that to someone the other night and they dropped on me. I don't want people to think I am trying to downrank them on purpose.

Evyrobody try to downgrade an opponent on purpose.
It's just obvious when you play ranked match and try to rank up.

If somebody lose over and over again with the same player at the same level, then maybe that person doesn't deserve that rank?

I guess it isn't that big a deal. And with the somewhat limited number of players I guess it can't be helped from time to time. I just wonder how I would feel if some guy who kept beating my ass kept joining my session to continue beating my ass. Feels like corpse camping. I just don't want to discourage anyone.

I don't think the router settings are the problem. I have played people and then had rematches later with the same person and got the dumb ass "unable to join session".

It's good because I can get a quick match in, but at the same time I can't change my character or level. . . plus it's harder to find a good player when all you can do is go through them one at a time.
