VF5R ver. b - Goh's impressions

    Hey guys, some of you may have noticed that a new VF5 version is out (I noticed yesterday, huhu). So here's some impressions after my today's trip to the arcade (I'm a real scrub, mind you, so don't expect fireworks and new combos or stuff... just some move changes).


    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - mostly same as before, doesn't seem like it can be hit-checked (I delayed only a slight moment and my kick got blocked after a normal hit. Was it like this?).

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - animation change, first hit looks like a vertical hook to the chin.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - new animation, Goh kicks all the way up and to the side now. Old combos still seem to work.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - looks a bit faster and snappier. Might be my imagination though /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - slower. You can actuall see his arm pretty clearly now. As a consequence, his tsukami comes out slower too.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - Goh lunges forward with the second hit, looks a bit like his /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif now. Still no knockdown or anything.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - new animation, upward palm strike. Doesn't feel too differently, more like the animation was brought more in line with the actual hitbox.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif (charged) - new animation where Goh uses his other arm for more momentum. Furious, far more visible. Not sure about its dodge properties.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - last hit seems to knock down on normal hit now (?)

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - new animation, still minimal damage.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - now this isn't funny. New animation for the punch, it's a small fast upwards palm strike now. Doesn't crumple, on normal hit does miniscule damage, on counter it gives a small float you can combo from. So long, our high risk - high reward move, now if you don't get a CH you get squat for landing that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - Goh actually takes a small running start before kicking now. Makes it far less useful after a back dash, since it takes longer for the actual kick to come out and moves him back into your opponent's range IMO. Maybe can be used for advancing if you are feeling cocky? Kick properties same as before.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - new animation for the second part, Goh gets up, picks his opponent by the hair and slams his face into the ground again. Not horrible, but missing the slick old one a bit...

    No changes whatsoever to throws, apparently.


    All in all, there's a lot more wild, wide flailing in Goh's moves now, which makes him look more different from his "compact" fighting style EVO version with every new iteration. More palm strikes/slaps as opposed to punches, and more "dirty" moves in place of clean, sharp techniques from before. I guess Sega's making him look like he's gradually losing it... or simply relaxing and enjoying himself ever more? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

    Still, changes to /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif are a bit meh.

    That's it for now, hope someone more competent can add something I would find useful too /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

    Thanks for the updates man. I understand your small dislike for some of the animation changes too. His new 6p+kp (old 6pp), looks straight ugly now. He lacks a lot of the finesse and control from previous versions. I definitely enjoy some of the brutality but it kinda got out of hand when he started flailing his arms wildly around the screen like someone who's never fought in his life.

    So, done some more testing of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif ... Unfortunately they seem to be kinda broken now... Wasn't able to punish whiffs even against a computer opponent with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif... Thit thing is simply too slow now, and that small running start takes Goh *right* back into the opponent's range in time to eat the last frames of the move you were supposed to punish... I used to use it a lot against people... Happier times... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is even worse - not only the damage, but the range on the punch is really miniscule too. The small float you get IF you manage a CH with is enough for a tiny combo, but not enough to make the rish worthwile IMO...

    Today I was fighting some Jacky with over 10k fights on his card; I was winning 2:1 in rounds and when we were down to the slivers of energy, I decided to gamble with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif roundhouse to punch... I managed to score a CH (yaaaay!) but then he hit a CORNER and fell straight to the ground without any significant followup (FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU).

    He got up, kicked me back and proceeded the following rounds /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif . Sure, just one fight, but with the old crumple wouldn't have happened... Did it really need changing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif ?

    Sorry for ranting. I'm warming up to the new animations though! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

    K, off to relaxing. Tournament tomorrow, wish me luck /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

    could this be used now to back dash bait rising attacks and punish? it sounds like it would be a nice, easy move to punish rising attacks when they are whiffed.

    And from an outsider looking in (not a goh user), i rather like his new animations. I thought Brutality was a nice way to describe it. I've thought his new animations fit with him being a stronger character. Have to admit though, after ur complaints i can see where someone might not like the changes. Especially, if aesthetically goes tight mechanics and matching animations are one of ur attractions to using him.
