Who wants to get some chess games in? My friends and I have a ventrilo server and I'm sure we can set up a channel devoted to it. I play on Yahoo with my friend AceStryke/Bloodshot.

Poker and Go are also fine, although I don't know a damn thing about Go.

    Any interest?

Right, if you know of something better than Yahoo and free then I'll play there.

Just lemme know when you want to play. I'll post up when Bloodshot and I are playing and see if there's any interest. Same goes for p00p00irwin and I on fulltilt, although I think he might've given that up for Shadowrun.

Eh, I'm horrible at it. I just try to sort it out by experience. Maybe if I care enough I'll try to find a good chess book, but it's just a game for fun after all.

i have a few friends that are interested in learning so im stuck beating up on them while they figure out the basics.. i topped out 10 years ago looking ahead 4 or 5 moves.. sometimes i can see a lil more but i never read enough to really get good at the game..

trying to avoid the same problem with vf5 by joining this forum and studying the game when im not playing..

I played it a fair bit when I was younger, then I thought it took too much of my time. I think at best I participated to the team finnish championships couple times playing on my (small) chessclubs last table for couple matches worth.

I have played it with my friends sometimes via a very nice java-chess application at http://www.aapeli.com, unfortunately the site is entirely in finnish. In fact the use of aapeli started when a cocky smashbros player challenged people into chess at our finnish fighting games ircchannel.. I beat him of course /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I don't know anything if theres a similar at yahoo, can you give me a link?

I used to play a lot of chess when I was a lifegurad. They took the chess boards away from us after a while becuase we were spending too much time playing chess lol. I'd play people over yahoo, that program thingy seems complicated just because I've never done it before.

I play TF2 on the xbox and get down on call of duty 4 too.

Right, in Chess I sort of just approximate my move and try to formulate a generalized strategy based on how they're moving their pieces. I'm not really that good at planning ahead explicitly either.

TF2 on XBL is like white castle cheeseburgers with no onions. It just doesn't work that way.

I'm sry we're not all blessed with funds to be able to play new PC games using the latest hardware (that's my gripe with PC games) so we have to use console versions. I prefer the joystick to the mouse I'm better at controling it, I know I'm in the minority here so no need for the usual "OMG the mouse is so much better!"

Actually for the price of a 360 premium and one of those horrendously overpriced peripherals you can upgrade your PC right now to play most of the latest games on medium. If you have a laptop then..err...I see your point.

The problem is that TF2 on XBL is fundamentally gimped. There are no custom maps, the voice chat is horrible compared to even Valve's source engine voice chat, and there are only 16 players allowed in a match as opposed to 32. The really awful part of it is most of the maps were designed with XBL in mind (flat plane, symmetrical), and instead the game took off in a big way on PC. Valve was just that cynical I suppose, and now they're taking forever to generate new content for just the PC version. It is a great game any way you cut it, though.

I have no problems with the way TF2 runs on my computer, and I have a GeForce 6600 and a 2.0Ghz athlon from 2005. It still runs on the source engine, which made its debut in 2004 and is getting a little long in the tooth at this point, since they insist on letting it run with the bare minimum of upgrades to create the illusion that the engine is scalable as fuck. Not that that really matters as far as the actual game is concerned, but the hardware required to play TF2 at a stable framerate isn't expensive or cutting edge at all.

When Im white, I normally open with queen's pawn to keep the situation remotely under control :p. Kings pawn openings can sometimes turn the game on its head bit too quickly heh.

I open with queen's pawn most games that play, regardless of which side I'm on. Initially it was "unusual", so I used it to confuse my weaker playing friends... then eventually I just got really good at it.

Like many other people, I was very awesome around 6 years ago (I once estimated I would be rated around 1000-1200, though it wasn't official), and since then I stopped playing much, and now I suck. I didn't have time to start playing at local clubs in an organized way, and was so much better than all my friends that eventually they stopped playing me.

Go is an amazing game, btw. I'm about as bad at that game as it's possible to be, and I still love playing, same problem though, noone around plays board games much, so I never actually get to play.
