this is just a thread for people to post their own personal videos, specifically just to get advice on how to improve their game.

i get basic advice from the rest of the norcal crew, but none of them main jacky so i don't get very specific advice most of the time.

so pretty much, all of my vids are open to critique, but it's these three especially that have been bugging me:

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XFzuhH5ZsQc"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XFzuhH5ZsQc" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iyvwXgmKcII"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iyvwXgmKcII" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/j2F3jWzQnxI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/j2F3jWzQnxI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

these vids are a bit over a month old, so i've improved on some things (mostly following through on combos and going for stronger throws more often), but i'd like to hear your guys' input on how i could improve. specifically on defense and things that are specific to these matchups i should watch out for.

i'll post my newer vids once haunts uploads them.

Your issues are mostly based in understanding the basics of the game and not just an understanding of Jacky.
    -----

You never evade; I know you play 2Ds... this isn't one.

Random/extended fuzzy guards; more often than not, you're in a crouched state for some reason. This is great against high throws/attacks and lows and nullifies some setups (like when I do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif after knocking you down). However, you don't mix it up and mids mess you up every time.

You know where you're at right? In SNorCal, we attack from disadvantage a lot. I suggest, though you don't own the game, to learn frames and understand priority. There are many instances where you just crouch there not doing anything and a simple /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif would stuff our options.

You like throwing, that is very good, but instead of doing shitty throws like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif opt for /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif//forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif//forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. This is SNorCal, we don't break shit.

There aren't many characters being represented at our gatherings and by now you should have at least a summary understanding of what Goh/Blaze/Jeffry/Lau are capable of. This issue is, I can abuse the hell out of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif(slight delay)/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif because I know you'll crouch or try to attack after the first. Check out everyone's command list on this site (as well as the frames). Become familiarized to the tools of each character.

Get VF4 Evo and play the tutorial... or finally get a copy of VF5.

Pick a different character for now; trying to learn another character increases your VF literacy greatly and allows you to reexamine your over all play style. I suggest Jeffry, Goh, Vanessa, Kage or Pai. Jeffry is at the top because you have no sabaki/reversal/inashi to worry about not fitting into your game, very good basic tools (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif!!!!!!, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif!!!!!, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif (in version C), /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif!!!!!!!!! mid mid strings ftw), and a throw game with incentive to do harder commands. Jacky is a hard character to play, especially since you don't /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, or hitcheck /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif.

Finally, slamming buttons on the stick doesn't help. Granted, we have the world's finest stick engineer in our backyard, those things can only take so much abuse.

this is a huge problem, i know. i'm always trying to get the sequence for OM committed to muscle memory. this is something i'll probably have down for the next one.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Random/extended fuzzy guards; more often than not, you're in a crouched state for some reason. that's something i fixed awhile ago. i recall you even acknowledging that at the last meet.

honestly, the only time i really fuzzy is either when i expect a throw and don't feel like risking an evade, or when i don't know how a move hits (much more of the latter).

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">You know where you're at right? In SNorCal, we attack from disadvantage a lot. i try to use /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/n.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif alot, especially to set up throws (kinda remind me of tick throws in guilty gear, so it's familiar territory to me)

and, i always keep jacky's frame data in an open tab at all times, even though i don't own the game. i'm always contemplating how i can attack from disadvantage alot, and what strings are safe to use (essentially none).

i do always try to go for sadistic when possible (or one inch variant -> sadistic), it just usually comes out being dragon snap. this is something i'd have resolved if i actually had a copy of the game to practice on.

and for some reason, i just have the hardest time going from 6 to 4 on a square gate, which is why i rarely pull off the knee snap. this is just another thing i have to get used to.

this is something i neglect terribly in both vf and ggac. it's something i'll get around to at some point, but i typically like to only focus on 1-2 characters at a time.

i mean, i still don't know how i can punish blaze's jumping thing that jay always throws out (though i have some ideas, like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif).

this is probably the single biggest problem. i can play guilty gear whenever i want because i have a ps2. vf5, not so much. i'm honestly still waiting for vf5r to be confirmed/not confirmed for consoles before i spend half a thousand on a console and one game.

not happening. i'm not changing my main for a game i don't even have a way to play regularly anymore. plus, i've already been practicing his combos for so long (i actually know a bit more than what i use in matches because i just can't reliably perform them. i'd rather land /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif than whiff a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif).

i do know the basics though for eileen, kage and lion. it's just a shame none of you guys play any of them (though didn't you say you have 16 alts or something like that?).

wait, you thought i wasn't joking about mashing harder?

when i press buttons during throws and shit, i'm just practicing certain inputs (like 64P+G). i have to make use of every moment i have to play since i still don't have a ps3/360.

I have agree with Sebo with the fact you just have to play it like a 3d game or just have a better understanding of the fundamentals. Ill upload some vids from this past weekend which will probably give you a better indication on what to work on. I mean I barely know what Im doing myself, but the main thing is though is that you're not really playing VF5. Even in the video you posted I am mainly messing around because I dont think you undertsand what is going on. Ill do like 15 mids in a row and you will just keep crouching. My whole game play revolves around conditioning my opponent so the odds on a mix up are in my favor. But if you always crouch 95% of the time, there is no mix up, i might well just do mids all day or low throws or whatever.

Also, you really need to not mash at all.. One way to remedy this is not have your hand rest on the controller, but have it hover above the controller so you are making more deliberate strikes to the button.

Finally, practice combos. When you get an opening youre doing a lot of weak shit. You should be doing your most damaging combos or throws, or at least try to put the hurt on your oppoenent with something besides throw into ground kick or whatever.

    hope that helps!

when you're at disadvantage you shouldn't think of what to do to attack but instead know what to do to defend because being at disadvantage means the move you do on top of being at disadvantage will most likely be more than anything your opponent will do meaning you will get counterhit. anything -6 on down you can fuzzy, from -7 to -11 eteg, anything above is a guaranteed pk for the opponent at the least. this is just from knowing your moves when you get blocked. usually you have to attack to be at disadvantage which also isn't something you press alot of the time.

when sebo is talking about evades its just the tapping of up or down not om. om is important to jackys game mostly in combos or trying to move past a rising attack. evade is more in anticipation of a linear move that you can move past mostly in disadvantaged situations.

i think you should use jacky's strings more. any string that starts from a jab for jacky has some kind of variation that goes into a high, mid or a low, learn those to mix up the poke if the first hit is blocked and react accordingly. you can even stop strings early while they block to mix a throw in. most of the time you are just poking with 1pk which is a good move but i think we all expect it or you are just waiting usually crouching. like take tre's vids for example he will mix ppp and 3ppp with variations of the k taking the initiative. take more advantage of your fastest moves and create a mixup instead of waiting to counterhit everything.

for combos try to learn the easiest ones first that work on everybody. like once you have them floated i think 2p 6pk works on like everybody (probably wrong but you get the idea). incorporating om, whiff 2p or flash sword kick in combos might be too advanced for someone who can't practice on the regular.

there are alot of common things between characters in vf like if you block 2p you can elbow them right after or if you block their knee class attack you can usually get some kind of launcher. learn more of the basic system stuff first when trying to apply how to punish.

if you are talking about punishing 8p+k for el blaze, its -9 on block so i can't fuzzy or evade a throw and it will take me 20f to get a jab out at the fastest.

and when you play my stick sounds like algjal;gjads;lgja;slgja;slgja;slghja;lja;lfhja'lja'ej

try to control what you are doing more. only shake when you are staggered. shaking the stick or mashing buttons does nothing while you are being put into a combo or past the point of escaping a throw. you should be preparing to quick recover, tech roll, or rising attack intead which all has a small window. you can tell you mash way more than you have to just from listening to the vids. less mash means more control with what you want to do next.

lol, the mashing during combos is just a bad habit i got from guilty gear. it's really the only time you can mash in that game, come to think of it.

but i guess i'll start doing what haunts suggested and actually put my hand above the stick and not on it. there's only three buttons anyways, so it's not like i'm gonna get confused (so long as i remember that x is confirm for ps3). this is something else i really don't get to practice regularly, though.

i've started to play regular vf4, just so i can get my mind working in three dimensions. it's so much easier to evade in this game though that i feel i'm gonna start making more mistakes if i get used to this game.

i don't know guys, maybe i should be playing marvel. at least then i could money match someone so i can finally get a way to play vf at home and a stick. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

also lol, i didn't intend for this to be the second norcal thread. are there seriously this few jacky mains who post here?

For beginners, I would recommend watching videos and trying to emulate what you see. After a while you will start to understand why some players do those things. Dont worry about advantage/disadvantage just yet. It is VERY important for vf but at your level, I would just recommend getting comfortable with your characters moves. What to use from where and learning baisc spacing techniques.

The most basic way I could suggest to play jacky is...

    Mid Range-
Mid Kick /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif from starting distance to poke
Heel Sword /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif from starting distance if they try to do a move

    Close range -
Elbow /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif if they are ducking
    Throw /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif if they are standing
Evade if you think your opponent is going to attack
Slant Knucke leg kick /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif if you think they are gonna throw
Beat knuckle, spin kick shufffle /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif if you get scared and want to escape

This is good advice. Just learn the moves and a few setups. To play jacky well you must have a good use of iageri to max damage combo's and basic setups. Jacky is mostly an offensive character and uses spacing to make opponents whiff rising attacks/moves.

Disadvantge/advantage is the hardest thing to learn if you don't completely know your opponents frames. If you only know Jacky's frames you can p and 2p alot at slight disadvantage like 4k+g or even a situation like 1p. Putting yourself at slight disadvantage using poking attacks is mainly a way to test the response of people you play. Become predictable with Jacky and suddenly switch if you are playing the same opponents. He can take so much damage that if you get your opponent used to you p and 2p, you will find you can evade and 33k frequently for large damage because they will attack first looking to hit you with a counter.

At the same time, the exact same principal applies to your opponent. Many people will attack you and you will p, 2p or big attack following guard because you will think they will p or 2p. What you will get is likely dodge and throw or launched. This is the rock paper scissors beauty of the game.

I'll give my own advice that may improve your game. In your first video you walk back and random attack far too much. Practice leading in or closing the distance with pp and if you see your opponent whiff something use 4k+g or throw. Make a staple 3 or 4 moves you always close distance with.

After you have mastered the advice of Sebo and LA Akira, you might find that being skillful is not how well you can control the character but how reliably you can make your opponent react the way you want.

A small tidbit that hasn't been mentioend that may help vs. Jeffry.

33K has a pretty high risk to low reward against both Jeffry and Wolf unless you hit them in open stance on counterhit. So really, unless you're feeling very comfortable, have the lead, or know it's gona land, 33K might be a move you want to avoid using on them all together.

I never fully understood Jacky's stances...all I know is that some combos work for one stance and doesn't for the other. Is that all?
