SO let me just clarify the figures, directly quoting the VGCHartz

    VF5:
    North America: 0.27m 26.8%
    + Europe: 0.48m 46.9%
    + Japan: 0.08m 8.1%
    + Rest of the World: 0.19m 18.1%
    = Global 1.02m

So 750 thousand copies were sold in the West, so me saying 770 was a misquote. But if "the rest of the world" includes Latin America and Australia, no reason to not include that in the West category. In any case, my point in saying that it sold nearly ten times in the West than in Japan, still stands.

VF4+VF4Evo sold 2.52 million copies total world wide. Out of that 1.13 million was in the US and 0.71 was in Europe. Again accounting the majority of the sales. (And underlines how badly VF5 was sold in Japan even when compared to VF4.)

Again these figures are not that bad by VF standard or any standard for that matter. Contrary to what people claim, a lot of casual players bought VF and it had a fair exposure that way. It just didn't tranlate to sustained, never mind increased sales. These are the numbers the Sega execs look at.

Is it possible to find out the number of people who play VF in Japan? maybe the number of cards sold? or the number of people taking part in competitions?

It could be that the number of console games sold is low in Japan due to the fact that the 'serious' players play in the arcades?

I think it will be interesting to see the numbers FS will do...is there a way to check XBLA/PSN sales?

Oh, come on. That's an unfair way to put it. I've never personally cared for Tekken, myself, but there's no reason to bash it, or the people stating their opinions about the game on a related thread, don't you think?

To comment on the OP video, it's very well done, especially in terms of production values. Obviously, there is some bias, but some of the discussion in this thread sort of helped clear a few things regarding VF3 and why I never saw it or heard of it in arcades I went to.

I can confirm that the large screen version of VF3 (the one with control panel a few feet in front of the screen) was at least $10,000. Sega was one of the first companies to start offering elaborate setups which were extremely high quality but unfortunately at the same time were alienating businesses, especially smaller ones, because they couldn't justify affording it.

My two favorite cabinets of all time were this one, and Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition.

we were lucky in Toronto - Sega Playdium had the master cab right away and then several smaller arcades got the large unit as well.

I can't imagine what the thought process was considering the price tag attached because a large format VF3 machine even popped up in a movie theater.

I remember going to Rochester to play against Psycho Pai Tim and Yupa and they had one of the sweet sit down VF2 cabs. that was comfy.

Card count is very inaccurate because people buy multiple cards. I was there only 2 months when VF4 was out and I've got 3 cards. You only get like 500 plays(VF4 era) before you have to change to a new card, and most cards are character specific, so you have to buy multiples if you play multiple characters. I have no idea what tournament entry numbers are like unfortunately.

Thanks for the info on the VF3 big cabs. Yeah, the elaborate hardware was not just a selling point on advanced tech, but was also Sega's way of combating piracy. They decided that if the hardware was so unique and advanced, pirating their games would be close to impossible, and they were right. Unfortunately they also priced themselves out of the market for many people.

My favourite cabs have always been the Astrocity cabs and their successors. Not too bulky, but really nice looking with decent joystick and button parts.

BEST VS vid i'v ever saw!!
cool idea putting last bronx in. ^_^

    VF3 #1 gameplay, learning factor & depth
    DOA2 #1 grafix & soundtrack
    Tekken 3 #1 story

I never liked tekken, because the stupid animals, bosses and lightning effects.

overall VF > DOA > Tekken (IMO)

    btw: its funny to see VF3 & doa2 in 16:9 ^_^
