The VFers at WCG AC 2008: Nin, Wugga, LuCieD, Itazan, Myke, Tetra, Toshi, Sock, Danny, Paperstone, Rulakir

Just wanted to give shout outs to all the guys I had the pleasure of catching up with, and meeting for the first time, at this event.

Firstly, congratulations to Itazan, Aoiyuka and Tetra on their well deserved placings! With Itazan, I kind of knew what to expect, and to be honest I think I probably played the best against him than the other two. Aoiyuka (from Korea) is just all around amazing. He is extremely skilled with just about every character, but he's a really friendly and easy going guy. Tetra was just extremely solid with his Vanessa and demonstrated his mastery of her consistently well. He knew how to chip away, or take huge chunks of damage in a hurry. Against all three of these guys, you couldn't afford to slip not even once, and that's what made this tournament so great.

    Shout Outs

Nin - You were so close to that 3rd placing! Great catching up with you again my friend. That chat we had with Aoiyuka on the first night (went for 2hrs?) was awesome eh? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I really want to learn more about Crazy Dongpal! VF truly is the universal language thoug -- who needs your ABC when you have PKG? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

danny13 - I know you're totally sick of hearing this, but I really felt for you during the Sg National Finals! Still, your support during the entire event was awesome, and it was great catching up with you again!

Sock - Great meeting you dude! I think your Akira is developing very nicely, which is no surprise if you train with danny! Thanks for being a great host, and showing us the "sights" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif If you're ever down my way, you can be sure I'll return the favour!

ice-9 - again, thanks for hosting us for some fun play. The 3-on-3 tourney was a blast! Would have been awesome had we had a camera setup to capture the crowd as the games went on. Still, I think you have a few replays that if you could upload would help some of us relive that magic /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Tetra - nice to meet you again, and your Vanessa again was too good for me! You, and the other guys in Singapore, are really lucky to have a guy like Danny that can give you really great competition with a wide variety of characters. I want to commend you on the fund raiser you started up for sending Danny to Germany. For him not to go would be a travesty in my mind, as he's one of the best VFers outside of Japan that I've had the pleasure of befriending over all these years. You did a really admirable thing dude, so well done. Of course, if I'm lucky enough then I'll see you both in Germany in a couple of months!?

Aoiyuka - I'm not sure if you'll ever read this, but it was really great meeting you. You are really strong with so many characters, so it's unique to meet a player like you. Kim and I really enjoyed our long chat that night, and we learnt so much about you and VF in Korea. It was amazing! Also, thanks to your interpreter (Michael?) for helping us too! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Toshi - You're a great guy and its a shame that we never managed to play each other, not even once! Your Jeffry looked like it would have been a fun challenge, so hopefully next time!? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Wugga, LuCieD, scytherage and the rest of the Sg guys, nice meeting you all over this fantastic event!

HDTV Lag FTL! Maybe I wasn't as used to it as others, but I found the lag on the HDTVs really unsettling. On top of the delay between input and display, there was also delay between display and sound!

Playing on my lap! Note to self: invest in a portable fold-a-table to rest joystick on. Nerves + tippy toes + wobbly knees = terrible inputs /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Punggol Nasi Lemak FTW! Nothing more to say other than "Beep, beep, beeeeeeep!" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

WCG BGM = Bullet in head It's been said before, but the official theme song of the WCG, "Beyond the Game" was on continuous loop for the 4 days straight. I am not exaggerating either. It didn't take very long for you to want to shove a screw driver in each ear to relieve the pain.

Great report! About the HDTV lag, is it possible to somehow get the word to WCG officials to get the better type of 360s with HDMI outputs so we will spared of the lag?! Afaik using VGA cable is also good, but connecting the standard composite video 360 cable to a HDTV is a no-no!

In the Finnish WCG qual we also had the lag, but we managed to get rid of it by using the other type of cables from the composite. I belive that is the crux of the problem.

edit: apparently its not that simple but Id really like some investigation done on this matter cause having lag in a high-profile competition like WCG is inexcusable if you ask me.

Actually, I think they were using HDMI outputs which made them better than they were originally. But I think it was more to do with the TV/display settings. Maybe they had a "game mode" which we should have used? I don't know.

What was worse was the lag inherent on the stage during the stage matches. They had some funky setup going on which gave a direct feed onto the two large screen projectors. Apparently this setup was much worse, and so the finalists (Aoiyuka and Itazan) requested they do something about it, because it was unplayable. In the end, they ended up getting video cameras to film and broadcast the matches to the audience, rather than use a live feed.

So if you watch the youtube footage of the finals, you'll notice it's not a direct feed on the big screens, but rather a camera feed.

What happened was, we changed to HDMI cables with settings 1080P and reference level Expanded.

It seems to be much better with that kind of settings. Vouched by Itazan and Danny.

Im happy you could talk to the organisers and do something about it, cause back in the day years ago, I got used to "suck it up!" attitude of organisers not from fighting game circles.

KoD said that primary reason for lag would be scaling?

However, I can vouch that in Finnish quals we also used 1080p mode with HDMI and it worked. However, the thing is that afaik not all 360s are capable for HDMI output? you need one of those 'better' 360s.

Yes only newer batch of 360s or Elite 360 have HDMI output.

You know it's also time to invest in earmuffs. How about posting the song so we can share your pain...

And you 'forgot' to put the pictures in 'our' gallery.

    Anyway, great report, Myke.

The Australia vs. NZ picture tuned out pretty good, cheers Myke! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

(oh and the theme song on repeat, you'll find it hard to believe, it wasn't as bad as it was in Italy, blasting continually over the entire grounds, and you with nowhere else to go)

I used to bring my personal arcade stool to every tournament I went to. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Gotta play it like you're used to! Nice write up Myke, I love hearing about these things.
