WCG Ultimate Gamer Challenge

I think it debuted tonight, and I wanna see what you guys think of it, mainly because they're gonna be playing VF5 next episode and it should be good for many laughs.

The show basically is an elimination style reality show where the players compete by competing in a simulated real video game challenge (in tonights case actually having to learn to play instruments and perform) and a video game challenge (in Rock Band 2).

I'm wondering if they're gonna have the contestants do MMA training or something and actually fight each other for their real life challenge.

I think AdamYUKI is in it! If so, he should be seen train a Jacky player. They would have to play the single player Arcade mode. Not the quest mode. And not a tournament for some reason.

What's Yuki's name? Is he competing on the show?

According to Yuki himself, he appears on the show as a "guest celebrity". He said something like the person who wins the physical challenge gets to train with him for an hour before playing the VF challenge. He talked about it in another thread on VFDC.

I watched the show tonight. I'm pretty interested honestly. I normally HATE reality shows, especially those that are elimination based, but this one is kinda fun. I don't understand the chick who's constantly crying (star-something, i think). I don't much understand the point of the physical challenges either. I'd rather just watch people play games.

I do have to question their choices of contestants. Not that I think they all totally suck at video games, but I've seen MUCH better scores on rockband in my own house. Perhaps we'll see the real talent come out in future shows, but right now it seems they're picking contestants for traits other than gaming. Like their trying to break the stereotype of "all gamers have no job and live in their moms basement." At this rate though, after this show is done people may look upon gamers with a new stereotype: Whiny bitches who cry a lot and think life is hard.

for what it's worth, i think the announcers for the vf5 matches at wcg did a good job of making their presence worth something.

even if at most they had a tl;dr version of the vfdc wiki as their base knowledge of the game, it was nice to hear vf commentated by someone other than some drunk japanese guy with a mic from the 80's.

and, keep in mind that while capcommunists pretend that vf doesn't exist and tekken players exclude vf from every 3d fighter event they hold, wcg is still with us and even for all the flaws in their tourney (like having ONE player per country, and thinking that there's vf competition in every country that participated), we should be grateful for their efforts to promote the game. for all we know, this could be vf's big break outside of japan.

edit: i know this is slightly ot, but the thread would've segued to this eventually. figured i'd just let it off my chest right now before this post gets lost in the ocean of complaints about reality tv.

well okay it's AWESOME and all, but my point is that just the fact that vf is now on a stage where it's even being worth commentated on outside of japan means a lot for the game and (hopefully) the non-japanese vf scenes.

maybe i'm too optimistic, but i'm really hoping that this is the break vf's been looking for in the west.

so we think it helps or hurts vf when games like street fighter 4 are bringing more depth. I want to think it helps via creating a crossover audience. But i worry that instead it may hurt vf's future popularity on two fronts.
1. If depth really does create a desire in some players to avoid fighting games, then street fighter could be moving to a marketing mix that will move fighting games further into a niche direction. Considering, street fighter seems to be a fighter game that already resonated with many who didn't particularly want to master the systems of vf.
2. If it does still grab the imagination of both hardcore and casual gamers, maybe some who would go to vf5 will get stuck on that bridge and take the stance, 'why should i play vf. Street fighter has depth to master, and it is much more popular." Thus the greater depth keeping players to street fighter who might have previously moved to vf.

I think I understand the point you're trying to make here. But Tekken players could make a similar point. Because Tekken has
more depth than some other fighters and is generally received as more popular than VF.

But...

Make no mistake. VF is the 36th Chamber. VF is the top floor of the Pagoda. Sure VF fighters would like VF to be more popular and accessible everywhere, but the Shaolin temple is the Shaolin temple, even if there was one on every street corner, only a handful are worthy in the end to enter, study, train, and serve /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

VF's niche status is the logical conclusion on an evitable path to solitude. Yes SFIV has depth, Tekken has depth, SCIV has depth, But VF has far more than depth, it is the closet thing we have to a true martial arts simulation. Yes, VF is sold and classified as a game, but its really a full blown computer marital arts simulation /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif Although its not the best simulation than can be made, it is the best one that has been made.

The reason why so many players shy away from VF (after tasting it) and go back to SF, Tekken, DOA, SC, MK /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif is they realize
that VF is far more than just a fighting game, and in order to be truly competitive it will require a amount of rigor that they are simply not prepared to expend.

VF will never be the fighter of choice for the majority of fighting game fans. All we can hope is that WCG raises the visibility of VF so that true martial art gamers who would have never known of VF's existence otherwise, will find out that such a game does exist.

VF is the Dashanmen of fighting games. The majority of fighting game players simply don't have the motivation to bring their game to a competitive VF level. And if you can't reasonably compete in some VF community you won't find the game fun (It lacks, the fireballs, crazy eye candy stages, explosions,
etc).

Social_ruin, SFIV is a legit fighter, but its not the 36th chamber /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

Yes, WCG Ultimate Gamer Challenge will have the contestants do some martial arts. social_ruin's post prompted my off subject response.
