What does VF, Tekken, and Tobal have in common ?

Well other than being great fighting games they've all been worked on by a man named Seiichi Ishii. He was the coordinator and main designer for the first VF. Then he went to Namco and was the director, main designer and also to a certain extent, the creator of both Tekken 1 & 2. Later he went to Square who helped him start his own development company, Dream Factory where he and his team created another one of 3D fighting's best games of all time, Tobal. But still you don't really hear much about him. It's crazy how a guy like Tomonobu Itagaki gets so much praises, which I guess is somewhat well deserved but still this guy who imo contributed more to 3D fighting games than any other game designers, gets no love. His latest work Crimson Tears (a beat em up) and the controversial Kakuto Chojin didn't do so well with the media and sales but I still would love to see him come up with a new fighting game. Just wanted to share this with those not familiar with this guy.

I've heard of him,it seems he's a bit presomptuous, thinking he's the creator of the fighting games and that he made the best ones (dixit Joypad, french vg magazine back when Crimson Tears was announced for the first time).

What was so great about tobal? I've heard from many people that this game was awesome, but never got a chance to actually play it myself. Anyone with an in depth look at the game?

Tobal has just frames, throw escaping, everything that modern fighting games have except Tobal had it years and years ago on the PS1.

9 years ago, to be exact. /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Amazing how Seiichi Ishii has had a hand in both leading 3D fighting game franchises and nearly surpassed both of them with one of his own!

To this day, I still consider Tobal 2 to be one of the best 3D fighters ever. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

Hell, I even own an actual copy of Kakuto Chojin!

    I miss Dream Factory. /versus/images/graemlins/tear.gif

    Thanks srider

I thought dreamfactory sounded familiar and i finally remembered the name of the game I really liked from them. Ehrgiez (may be mispelled). Awesome game and a precurser to Powerstone if you ask me. I wish they made a second one. Hell i wish Dreamfactory would make a bunch of new games because they are usually interesting to play.

Yo, just wondering who was the first to introduce techrolling to 3D fighters?

I've heard DoA, but many people also say Tobal which I think might be correct.

Well......Both Tobal #1 and DoA1came out in 96, if my info is correct. Looking into it right now, DoA did have techrolling first, but it was only in situations where you could be Danger Zone bounced.

Techrolling, as we know it today, was not in Tobal until the 2nd game, whcih came out in 97and DoA2 (which might have also had techrolling) didn't come out until 99, so if that's the case, Tobal would be the first to have standard techrolls.

I might be wrong on any of this though, so anyone feel free to confirm/correct any of this.

Tekken 3 which I believe, came out before Tobal 2 or around the same time, also had techrolling. But I'm pretty sure members of the Tekken team and Dream Factory shared ideas. Namco and Dream Factory even worked together on Ehrgeiz. So that alone shows you that even though he did leave the company and started his own team, they didn't hold any grudges or anything. The rest of the team who stayed with Namco still looked up to him.
I remember back in the days when Ehrgeiz came out I always wondered why Namco would team up with Square, of all companies, to do a fighting game. It all makes sense now.

Not too sure. FV had air recovery, but that's all I remember and it's been too long since I've played FV2 to know if anything changed.

Ah! Your right. Tekken 3 came out one year before Tobal 2.

That little anaysis does make sence though. Going even further on Ehrgeiz, the game even had lots of moves striaght out of Tekken. Just look at Godhand (AKA Ken Mishima), Jo, and Han's movelists for proof. They may not be exact, but they are pretty darn close.

And also for some reason, when journalists asked them about the relation between Godhand and the other Mishimas, Namco would never elaborate or even comment on it. But yeah you're right there's alot of Tekken influence in that game, from the character designs to the fighting styles.
