Whats the rule on macros?

I've tried playing with a stick, but I just can't. I have to use a pad. Problem is I use my thumbs so I have to assign macros. What are the rules on them at tournaments?

I've been wondering that too. And what about playing against a player in general. Is it fair to assign macros? What if you have a joystick and the other player doesn't, is this a fair fight or do I have to use a pad too. What about if you are using a joystick, is it cheating to use macros still, though I don't see why you would have to with a stick.

I just got a fighting stick. I thought it would help me, but I'm still trying to get used to it. Maybe it would help if I didn't play with it on my lap. You really have to have a nice solid surface and height to play with a stick. But with a pad I'm not accurate with circular moves. Maybe with a lot of practice it can improve.

except for small ones, i've never heard of a tournament allowing macros. of course the issue is pretty rare since the few people i've seen play with pads don't use macros.

Some would argue that in the heat of battle, pressing multiple buttons simultaneously is prone to human error, and so using a macro would be unfair since it eliminates (or significantly reduces) that human error.

This is especially true if you're doing rapid-fire Throw Escape inputs -- the timing of each direction with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is critical to success. Doing multiple TEs with a single button is easier than with two buttons.

At previous Evo tournaments, I know there was a ban on pad macro assignments, but when I ran the VF tourneys at Evo, I didn't enforce the ban because:

    1. I figured that it was difficult enough to play using a pad, so macros didn't bother me so much.

    2. I had yet to meet a pad player where I felt they had an unfair advantage from using macros. Do they exist?

Going on what Myke said, it doesn't really make things any easier (especially in VF). EVO 2k this year allows in game menu macros, but no hardware macros at all.

I think its fair to allow macros on a pad due to the nature of its shape and ease of use, its actually easier to ETEG on a stick than using macros on a pad, you cant keep hold of the guard button with a macro so it results in an evade and whiffed throw most of the time. When I used to play on a pad at little tournaments the only person that had a problem with it was a sore loser who complains at everything anyway. Everyone else didnt care. 270 degree moves are easier on a pad but crouch dashing is tricky

I think its cheese to use macros but I don't care if you use them.

If you're going to use a pad, then you just kinda have to use macros because you really can't always physically manually push two buttons at the same time. Especially not [] + O or X + Triangle in the heat of battle.

I would argue that macros don't make the game easier because what you're actually doing is turning a 3-button game into a 7-button game. You may not have to manually press 2 buttons at the same time, but now you have to work 7 buttons into your gameplay. Like this game needs anything to make it more complex.

As for the official rules of Evo:

Any advantage pad players can get they can take. Playing pad is so damn hard. I say let them have macros cause honestly this game was made for stick.

wow., our folks typically using the pad and we're just now I guess growing up enough to use the stick. For us its just the other way around the pad seems easier.

But on the macro thing we 'assume' that the players that we play are able to effectively use the entire command set of any fighter.
So we train accordingly. If the combination or sequence can be executed by any human player we assume that we might be facing that player. So bring the macros on.

Anyway in the heat of battle a knowing just when to use a macro sequence requires skill as well

Macros on a pad make some games easier and, at the same time, harder. VF is a good example because it's about reading opponents movements and counting frames. Macro's are available to help players with the guaranteed way to counter an opponent and use a counter attack to lay the smack down! So if you don't know how to act on certain situations, but you know how to do every move in the game, you will get your ass kicked most of the time!

Masterpo it seems that way when youve been on a pad for a while, I know. But give it a couple of months and youl see sticks are the way to go.

I think pressing 2 buttons on a pad is easy. But pressing 3 buttons is hard. So you should at least allow 1 mapping of a 3 button move. I usually assign x to g+p+k with the pad and turn off the rest. My thumb seem to be slow when doing a <-, -> move but faster when doing a ->,<- move, go figure. Oh and circular moves are hard for me too on a pad. I guess I haven't played for while.

    Oy. What is macro?

  15. Even I didn't know what the term macro was but you can figure it put by reading the thread... setting buttons to perform multi-button inputs (like setting L1 to P+K).

I've been using pad exclusively with Tekken for 10 years and never once did I seriously play and practice using "macros". Only in the early years during T2 but only for a a session or 2.

With VF, it's the same way. If I want to sway with Brad, I use my thumb across square+triangle+circle. If I plan using G+K immediately following a sway or duck, I'll use 3 fingers to input G+P+K)so there's a smoother transition from that to G+K (which can only be done using your fingertips since it's square and circle). This is no problem for me b/c of how long I've been doing it... so I say no to macros haha.
