Who to play?

Discussion in 'New Starter' started by Brandon Gordon, Feb 24, 2013.

  1. Still new to VF and I am wondering who is a good starter character to learn the basics with? I started off playin Eileen but now training with Jean. Is he a good starter character or should I choose someone else? Plz help...

You should try to learn who appeals to you most. That said, Jean isn't a bad character at all to start with. You'll need to work pretty hard if you want to get good with Eileen, but that shouldn't discourage you from using her.

The one you like best. They all rely on the basics and the cast is well balanced. I think you'll learn faster playing a character whose style you enjoy. Makes you want to get better. Shun Di and Vanessa have the longest movelists (I like it). Akira has some inputs that are... too hard for me (and I'm not alone in this I think ;) ). Those things don't have to stop you from using them.

I've read a couple of times that Jean is a good starting character, I'm not sure I agree. I'd say that Lau Chan and Jacky are both easy to pick up and do some damage with.

What's important in a character for me personally is rhythm and style. Sounds weird maybe, but the game is about timing, mix ups, set ups, attack and defense, back and forth. Some characters "click" easier for me than others. I tried them all and ultimately ended up with the one I simply feel most comfortable playing. Not necessarily someone I "picked". It was more like: "I'm enjoying playing this one the most so I'm going to get better at it".

I can't find the thread I was reading the other day where someone wrote a summary of all the characters, their respective strengths and weaknesses etc.. anyone ? It was a good read.

  4. Thanks! This was very helpful. Thanks for taking out the time to respond.

  5. That make since. And you are right about Eileen, I enjoy her but have a very difficult time online playing with her. She just so quick, and sneaky. Lol!

I've been trying to learn this game on and off, and from what I can tell, Lau and Jacky are probably the easiest characters to get your foot in the door and properly using all the basics. You can still learn VF basics with every character, but a lot of the other characters seem to rely on extra mixups or stance options to get the most out of them. You can be very effective with just the basics with those guys.

You don't want your character choice to negatively affect how much fun you have with the game, though. Jean is a pretty good option as well, just wouldn't rely on the charge-cancels and such at the beginning.

Jeffry is a good pick for beginners because his move list is not that large and he does good damage , also he relies on all the basic attacks like p,2p,6p,and 6k. Wolf and Jacky are also good to start out with because you can get to a competitive level with them faster than most other characters.

  8. I heard that Jeffry is a really good beginner character. Might check him out...not a Huge grappler player but I will take a go at him.

I had a quick go with Jeffry the other night, never used him before. 1PP seemed great, and when they start crouch guarding that, do a low throw! His head cannon special pose is hilarious if you have the outfit pack :D
