Why is Virtua Fighter 2 so good?

I mean why the hell does a 13 year old game play so much better than the latest Tekken or Soul Caliber ect.? There's so much depth, so many moves to master and it's all about skill (instead who can mash buttons the quickest). You can learn a great move but it won't necessarily be of use unless you can time it just right.

I get bored of these stupid "adventure" and "story" modes that you often get in beat 'em ups and yet I can just keep playing the arcade mode of VF2 over and over again, trying to perfect my moves and trying to beat my best time.

So here's to the greatest fighter ever made (though I haven't played any games in the series after it, haha). /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Your missing out you should pick up a copy of vf 4 evo for the playstation 2 it is by far my favorite game in the series. It teaches you alot about the vf game system and how it works in the tutorial mode. The quest mode is a great way to challenge top ranked japanese players without even having online features.

Really? Sound's interesting, how does it work?

The thing putting me off VF4 is the PS2 control pad. That D-Pad is utter cack and makes the average beat 'em up a painful experience.

It is a fake. Quest mode just tweaks up the difficulty of the AI and tells you that you're fighting Chibita or Kyasao.

Gamepad does suck for fighting games, I don't know how people play on them.

VF2, by the way *is* a great game. so broken but broken in such a way that almost every advantage given had a counter. I love that game.

VF2 had too many exploits ... VF3 is still unbeaten as best title of the series in my opinion.

eh, the only real exploit that didn't have an out was senbon rush with Akira and most people didn't resort to it.

VF3TB is an excellent game. VF2 and it jockey for position all the time.

I miss reversal jams... VF2 had some fun bugs.
VF2 is a simpler game, very much rock-paper-scissors. The later versions offer more options in certain situations... I don't always know if that's a good thing.

despite the myriad of options (disguised as depth) in later versions the basic guessing game has not changed.

It's because we are! Nowadays people who started VF with VF4C on PS2 are considered veterans, and VF3TB ones - wise old sages. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Here's to hoping that old VFs get arcade-perfect ports on XBLA.

And Last Bronx. Anyone remember that one? If Sega brought it back, they could pwn SC the way that VF pwns Tekken.

My arcade had Last Bronx. It was fun to play when I was bored of everything else. It was run on the Model2 board wasn't it?

As for VF2 there was a huge uniqueness that no other VF has had since - the wireframes!

What I mean by that is since the characters themselves weren't covered up by bulky clothing and textures you could much easier see the wireframe movements. One of the best examples is Jacky's Beat Knuckle (Bitch Slap). Granted the wireframe for that move in VF2 is different than the rest but it is a good representation of what I'm talking about.

Every move in the game has a certain smooth flow to it. It just looks REAL in my opinion. Other things that come to mind are Jacky's hammer throw, Akira's stumble you on your ass single palm, Akira's guard break, Wolf's side kick reversal, and Shun's breakdancing in the demo.

Then of course there were all the little weird tricks you could do. Nothing was cooler than doing the reversal glitch with Akira to Akira, making him go up one level in height, KOing him with the Stun Palm, pounce to the ground, and then finally during the winning stance screen his belt would be hanging in your face. If that sounds confusing, sorry, it was the best I could describe it. =)

Does anyone remember how Jacky had a breakdance kick in VF2? It was lying down, face down head towards, and hold down + kick.

I totally agree regard certain animations. They were SO fluid. Especially stuff like Akira's guard breaks and surprise exchange, wolf's mid kick counter, jacky's bitch slap. And collisions were basically perfect.

Ha, I loved that... too bad the Saturn port removed it. UGH.

This topic sucks ass. Only kids use pads. Arcade sticks FTW. Just came in to say that.

    Oh and VF2 is awesome.

  20. Why is VF2 so good? STUN PALM OF DOOM , bitch! I wish I knew then what I know now, Stun palm use to count as an inescapable throw in VF2, And Im way bette at SPOD these days. Another reason VF2 was so good was Akira's reversals cammands actually made sense: You tap block, then hit back and punch(or 1p, or 2 p) Thats whats you actually do ina revesal, block and strike. Being that Akira doesnt use his FEEt for reversals why is the new command 6p+K? They had to make it all uniform for slow kids with poor memories. Oh and the boss Battle RULED in VF2!! Slow motion underwater battle with Dural, classic, and really highlighted the Animation. Since Yu Suzuki left we don't see innovation in VF like that anymore. VF2 was the only version with an ending cinema, and gave a CONGRATULATIONS acknowledging if you actually beat DURAL. TO TOP it OFF, Virtua Fighter 2 on console had a "Learning AI" option for the cpu so when you fought through arcade mode the computer would learn your attack habits and adjust accordingly to ramp up the difficulty. That feature was since abandoned. SAD, really being that with the computational power of today's consoles, the CPU could get to frighteningly human level of competition. Instead when I play VF5 on 360, the computer can never figure out I'm going to dodge his rising kick EVERY time and punish him. (Even on so called "EXPERT" difficulty). Tsk.
