With the global economy in a tail spin, and some of the major game publishers laying off and cutting back.

Will the casual gamers keep buying games in this economy or will it be the hard core gamers that keep the whole thing floating?

I kind-a-hope its the hardcore gamers. If that's the case then we'll have more influence on what kind of stuff is going to be released for 2010 and 2011 right?

We the hardcore gamers don't mean noting no more. why cater to a few 100,000?

Hard core!!! Casual gamers buy so few games anyways. A friend of mine was trying to tell me Wii Golf is better than SFIV, I didn't even know what to say. This dude would buy a game once every 2 years... Why cater to him???

He's not discerning and he doesn't even spend money on games! Catering to these Wii-playing, casual retards is just backwards!

    I HATE the Wii.

If the lack of availability of Wii Fit and the rash of preorders of EA Active are any indication, I don't think the casual game train's going anywhere. If anything, it feels like people buy more games. Guess you need something to do to take your mind off the economy.

I watched DDR, one of my former pursuits, fall deep into casual gamer hell. It wasn't pretty.

Can you elaborate on this? I play Guitar Freaks and I thought it was funny when people went all gaga over Guitar Hero. Still, I appreciate that the genre has exploded. I'm not really into GH or Rock Band, though. I'm lucky enough that Arcade Infinity stays current with GF/DM.

What is casual hell for DDR though? New mixes with shit that's too easy? I don't play DDR.

More or less. Nowadays home versions are all about packing licensed tracks in, and less Konami originals. More difficult songs don't come along as much, and it feels like DDR is more about what neat things they can do with DDR besides, y'know, stepping on arrows.

And when Konami sued and bought out Roxor, who WAS making extra hard tracks for higher end players, that sucked.

I'll go even further and bet you that 99% of the people that bought Wii fit used it one time or less. That's how Wii players do.

Not 99% but yes, many people put their Wiis aside 3 months after buying it. There was a research about it somewhere. The attach rate from casual gamers is really low, which is why the big software companies keep pushing for big next-gen experience instead of sitting in the seemingly comfort zone.

I know two people in my family that have Wiis. 4 Months after buying it, one wanted to trade it for my PS3, the other sold his. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

The increase of casual gamers = the increase of hardcore gamers.

Ok, I'll give you that. Every hardcore gamer was originally a casual gamer.

Hopefully they'll keep making stuff for that market once those gateway consumers take the leap.

With any fitness product that's usually the case. Same thing could be said about gym's. Once people get that one year contract, is rare you see them again after the first month. Especially if you get a package with a trainer.

As for the "That's how Wii players do" is stupid already. People are still playing Mario Kart on the Wii, same with SSBM, and TvC. Tenchu 4 was just released, Mad World is going to be fun, Same could be said about Sin and Punsihment 2(Treasure FTW!)and Punch Out. And then, there's the RPG's like DQ and the new title by the guys who did Odin Sphere. The Wii is just as "Hardcore" as the other systems.

i bought wii cause it was cheaper than xbox360...after about 3 or 4 months i stopped playing it and decided i needed a more serious system and now i have an xbox 360.

Sorry, but that's bullshit. Mario Kart isn't hardcore, nor is SSMB srsly. It may be fun for all kinds of gamers, but hardly hardcore. TvC and No More Heroes are the only ones that come my mind in 2008. You call 2 hardcore games a year, "a hardcore console as much as the 360 and PS3"? Please..

I agree with this post but you forgot RE4 and Madworld!

I'll repeat this one more time...Mad World, Tenchu, Dragon Quest, Sin and Punsihment 2, Murumasa: Demon Blade, No More Heroes 2, Monster Hunter 3 and Punch Out, to name a few. That's a pretty "Hardcore" line-up for the Wii this year. They have the infamous Treasure and Vanilla Ware doing games for Nintendo. Shit, the Wii has more shmups titles then the PS3, lol. And that's consider a "Hardcore" genre.

    I said 2008! ;P (and RE4? what? o.o)

The Wii this year is all about Madworld and No More Heroes 2 for the hardcore. MH3 if it's released state-side in 2009, otherwise it's pointless to list a bunch of games that aren't going to see the light of the western shores anytime soon. I even gave the Wii credit for TvC last year, when it was released in Japan only.

But if you look at the 360 and the PS3, they already have more than that announced and released this year for the hardcore (SF4, Killzone 2, Skate 2, RE5, Bayonetta, Star Ocean 4, Bionic Commando, T6BR, Uncharted 2, GoW3, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, White Knight Chronicles, inFamous, Prototype and many many others). Not to mention FF13 and Yakuza 3, who are coming out in Japan this year, and the expansions/add-ons to other hardcore games like Halo 3, Valkyria Chronicles, etc. Sorry, the Wii doesn't hold a candle compared to the actual current-gen consoles.

Also is Punch Out really a hardcore game are you just trying to push it like Mario Kart and SSMB? (honest question, I don't know about Punch Out)
Tenchu.. I have good memories of the first and second ones, but the new one for Wii is in a "wait and see" status, it could turn out to be a very toned down version of the game in order to please the casual crowd.

Let's say all the consoles have some hardcore games and some casual games. When the game publishers have to cut back on staff
and new releases over the next couple of years, will the new hardcore titles be cut or will the new casual games be cut?

I hope the causal gaming thing was just a fad, I would hate to see the majority of the new titles that come out in 2009/10 be
    for casual gamers /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

In what universe is that true? The wii has, what, blast works, milestone collection, and shiki 3? How many PS3 shmups are available on PSN again? SSHD, soldner, everyday shooter, joint strike, blast factor, cash guns, novastrike, powerup forever?

If you're trying to talk quality, they're both mostly shite, but everyday shooter destroys all of the wii titles.

If you're trying to talk about VC / back compatible games, wii has some good stuff. . . but PSone owns it, and if you have a ps2 compatible ps3 it's no contest.

What's with the ShinobiFist harassment and the massive hatred of the Wii? If your goal is to get everyone on this board to believe that the Wii is not hardcore, well, OK (I guess). Would you really get that much satisfaction from it?

I usually appreciate your passion about the things you believe and I can't see where this road could lead.
