We had a pretty good discussion the other day on IRC about great RnB songs and it's got me in the mood to make a MP3 mixcd for my car.

What I want from you guys/gals is your favorite soul/RnB/motown songs that I should consider to put on the disc. I figure making it a Top 50 or so disc, so you can have quite a few suggestions.

A few of my favorites are:
Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye
    Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye
Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
Reflections - Diana Ross and the Supremes
Papa was a Rolling Stone - Temptations
Reach Out (I'll be There) - The Four Tops
Let's Stay Together - Al Green

That's a good starter. Thanks to all who submit.

What are we supposed to say if we think RnB (yes - all of it) is a disgrace?

Ever heard Chris Rock's bit about RnB? Laughed my ass off.

You could just ignore the thread and move on to something else. It's not that hard.

Some R&B songs (some not Motown) I like:

    "Use Me Up"-Bill Withers
    "Lovely Day"-Bill Withers
    "Ain't No Sunshine"-Bill Withers
"Love Child"-Diana Ross and the Supremes
"I'm Gonna Make You Love Me"-Diana Ross and the Supremes
    "Inner City Blues"-Marvin Gaye
    "Killing Me Softly"-Roberta Flack
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"-Roberta Flack
Just about anything from the Isley Brothers, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder (especially Songs in the Key of Life)

There are others, but it would be a long list. /versus/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The last verse of "sittin on the dock of the bay" made me ball like a little girl not too long ago. So I backdash the song and as Redding's voice starts to crack again I'm all throatlumped and tears. I cued the song again. And again. Wanting despite myself to cry more.

Chris Rock's bit on RnB is regarding it's current state - which he cited as little more than people wailing over rap beats. His entire point was how RnB is no longer a respectable genre - implying that at one point it was - I tend to agree with him 100%.

Anyone who calls anything by Aretha Franklin a disgrace probably doesn't know a whole lot about music. Her vocal range rivals that of opera singers and she sings with a passion that can keep you up at night. I recommend you maybe give some of her stuff a listen. Chain of Fools ranks among my favorites.

Other than that, I agree with ghostdog on many of his choices - Bill Withers and the Supremes are two of my favs - particulary Ain't No Sunshine (BW) and Reflections (Supremes). Stevie Wonder has quite a bit in his library that I deem as "must haves" as well, including A Place in the Sun, For Once in my Life, God Bless the Child, Superstition - I could go on forever.

Good topic replicant! I'm going to have to dig in my crates when I get home tonight and try to find some more suggestions.

'poppa was a rolling stone', the Temptations (among many many others).

I think you hit the nail right on the head, sixtwo.

I agree for the most part on this. I find very little RnB from the mid-80's and up worth listening to for more than 10 seconds. Although, I do like a couple cuts from Boyz-2-Men and Alicia Keys (although, they border on pop. Alicia I find very talented.). Any of that crap from r. kelly, bone/thugs, toni braxton, jodeci, beyonce, aaliyah, bobby brown, etc. just annoys me.

I'm kinda the same way on my taste in rap. I tend to prefer the 80's rap (Doug E. Fresh, Public Enemy, NWA, Grandmaster Flash, etc.) to almost anything made in the past 10 years.

In general... new R&B and Hip-Hop sucks.

My friend told me that in almost every R&B song you're gonna find certain words... like baby, love, I love you, complete, heart, together, everything...etc etc.

=) It's just funny how that is. I like Marvin Gaye, but I prefer "What's goin' on". That song rules.
