You always end up back where you started. My first foray writing Virtua
Fighter FAQs began with the Virtua Fighter 2 Ranking Mode FAQ; now it ends
with the Virtua Fighter 3 Ranking Mode FAQ. By the autumn leaves, I
will leave the safe confines of the University system, with its attendants
unlimited Internet access and free workstations. For the forseeable future
I will have neither the means (no money) nor the manner (no computer)
to post on the Internet. So please enjoy my last effort in the VF scene
for some time to come.

I. Introduction

In VF2 your rank was based solely on performing a predefined set of moves
a requisite number of times. As you may have deduced from the score
screen at the end of the game, VF3 ranking mode expands on this with a much
more complex point system.

II. Point System

Many variables affect the final outcome of your score.

A. Damage Inflicted
   When a move hits the CPU opponent, the number of points awarded
   is proportional to the damage caused.

      Dam = Final_Damage * [ 1/4 * (Sequence in Combo + 3)] *
            { 181 / (Maximum Life Bar + 1)}

B. Required Technique
   VF3 requires you to hit the CPU with certain predefined moves just
   like in VF2. Each time you strike a hit with the requisite move,
   you are awarded two scores, tech 1 and 2.

      Tech 1 = Points assigned to the required move
      Tech 2 = 1

   VF3 Requisite moves only count once per opponent, eg.two of Sarah's
   punt kick against Lau only registers as one punt kick for point
   purposes.

C. Energy Remaining
   Each set you win awards points equal to the amount of life bar
   remaining. Half the value if you win by ring out.

      Ener = Amount of Life Bar
       If ring out:
      Ener = 1/2 * Amount of Life Bar

D. Time Remaining
   Each set you win awards points equal to twice the number of seconds
   left on the clock. Truncate the milliseconds.

      Time = 2 * Number of seconds on the clock

E. Excellent
   Each "excellent" win gets you 100 points.

      Excel = 100 * Number of sets won without sustaining damage

F. All Clear
   For completing the game including defeating Dural, you receive
   200 points.

      Clear = 200

At the end of each round, no matter if you win or lose, the points are
tallied as follows:

      Round = Dam + Tech 1 + Ener + Time + Excel

However if it takes you more than two sets to complete a round, a correction
factor is introduced

      Round = Round * ( 2 / No. of Sets needed to win )

The total points at the end of the game are computed by the formula

      Final Points = ( Sumation of Round Points + Clear ) * {100 + Tech 2}

The computer stops recording your points after you lose a round; thus
continuing after losing does not affect your rank. Likewise, if a
human challenger defeats you, the computer stops rank scoring.

III. Requisite Techniques

I do not yet have the complete list of VF3 requisite moves. But in theory
it's not much different from the VF2 requisite moves system. Easier
to connect moves require you to perform it on more opponents. See my
VF2 Ranking Mode FAQ for more details.

VF3 does reward you bonus points for using some special moves during
air combos. Be warned, these moves are difficult to connect.

    Special Bonus Moves for Air Combos

Akira       u+P                       20 points
Jerky       d+P+K,K,K,K,K             20 pts.
Sarah       P,P,P,u+K                 20 pts.
Kage        d, U/F+K (>3.0m)          50 pts.
Lau u+K+G (when facing away) 30 pts.
Jeffry P+K (when running) 40 pts.
Pai         d,U,f+K                   40 pts.

Aoi         d,d+P                     30 pts.
Taka P+K+G (must wait 1 sec.) 10 pts.

                                        Jirawat Uttayaya
