Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat & Injustice and creative director at NetherRealm Studios, recently echoed what the entire VF and perhaps the greater Fighting Game community have been wanting, needing, requesting and even demdaning: "Someone needs to reboot VIRTUA FIGHTER".

    ed_boon.jpg

Ed is not the first notable gaming figure to publicly address the lack of a new title in the Virtua Fighter series. Tekken Director, Katsuhiro Harada made a similar acknowledgement and went so far as to cheekily suggest that even if Bandai Namco created the next VF, that VF fans would still reject it purely because it carried the Bandai Namco badge.

Every now and then, a buzz can be heard around the social-sphere about a new VF, from fans to industry heavies alike.

    Is SEGA even listening?

This is a realistic but yet it's also a pessimistic thing to say. If anyone would make a new VF I'd hope that would be the main purpose: To have people still be around or else we're gonna wait another 7, 8 years for another VF to play..

Its kinda like how SF revitalized itself with SF4. I was not a big fan of the change from 2D to the graphics we have now...but weirdly overtime it grew on me. I still prefer classic retro SF but after seeing enough of the gameplay I realized that yep. This is probably the direction they ought to go with. Camera work, the HUD, the theme aspect of the visual with black ink. The hypeness in the announcers "KO" voice, adding costumes, paying homages to refrences only some people would get. This is what good presentation looks like...and it got me. Plus the gameplay was great but hard to master, sounds familiar? ;)

They can do so much without adding fireballs and such. Just look at what DoA did with Jacky. Akira, Sarah and Pai. They all look better than they ever been! I was amazed when I seen this combo vid of Jacky and thought to myself "This game has Jacky!? I gotta get this!"

Now they can do without the explosions, crazy bs, and all that danger zone jazz :ROTFL:. That's just a Dead or Alive thing that gets people to play. But I really loved them in DoA and wished they've added Wolf Hawkfield and the rest of the og VF gang..(just imagine a dope looking fight between the praying mantis Lion, vs the Snake Fist Christie.. such beauty..) That's why I'd say if anyone could do it besides Sega, it's Tecmo and Team Ninja. VF and DoA practically have the same button layout. So it wouldnt really feel that much different.

And I also feel that combat sports approach would be that drastic change you spoke about. Since we are all so used to the 3D fighter aspect of VF, it would be sorta weird for them coming out as a combat sports simulator like UFC series titles. Not saying it wouldnt sell, just off putting.

Have you ever heard of Shaolin vs Wutang? Pretty cool looking game if anything I'd say that it the closest in terms of reality and martial arts fitting for a video game. Just needed better graphics and better functional gameplay..so I've heard. But it looks wonderful.

All very good points. Agreed , if anybody it would be Team Ninja. You are so very right about the graphics and treatment of the VF characters in DOA5LR.

I too wish they had brought the entire VF Roster into DOA5LR, that would have been awesome.

But Tecmo is trying to force the microtransaction live service $hit with DOA6. That would be a disaster afaic.

      And yes that Shaolin vs Wutang is off the chain. If it were a 3D movement game I'd be all over it. I hope it does well. Do you know what kind of community it has? If VF's engine , and 3D movement could be applied to;

      https://store.steampowered.com/app/466110/Shaolin_vs_Wutang/

I also agree that going the combat sports route would be off putting (at first) but then it would grow on you:ROTFL:

Just think about it, after the initial triumph of VF, VF has always been seen as the odd man out, even though everyone acknowledges that its a master piece, has superior game balance, and is pioneer in so many things that make fighting games what they are today. VF's actual community remains niche. I submit that the reason it remains niche is that VF really does not belong to the 2D, 2.5D gaming community, and that its something different. It was a new breed altogether.

Rather than looking at VF as the natural evolution of 2D and 2.5D arcade fighting games. We should realize that VF was the first 3D combat sports ( mixed martial arts) fighting game to be played in arcades:cool: VF is actually the progenitor of the UFC games. The reason why VF is always the odd man out in the arcade fighting game scene, is because it really belongs in the combat sports fighting game scene:oops: In the combat sports game scene we have

      Boxing
      Wrestling
      Mixed Martial Arts
      Martial Arts

Virtua Fighter fits right in(y) VFs online community would immediately jump in size. The notoriety of VF would immediately increase once it was introduced to the combat sports gaming community. If VF's launcher and juggle animations were converted to stumble, stagger, and stun animations it would immediately take its proper place as a combat sports game:cool: (even with no marketing:ROTFL:) imo its time to put VF with the family where it really belongs, where its realism and no nonsense combat really truly fits.

In the combat sport game community VF wouldn't be derided as being boring or dull. Its stages wouldn't be criticized for being too simple. To the contrary VF would immediately be accepted into the combat sports family. Granted, VF might lose some its current 2D and 2.5D FG community , but it would gain a considerably larger and more appreciative combat sports community:)

I'm saying this as an ardent VF fan. The best thing that could happen to VF (as far as growth potential) would be for it to move towards more realism and position itself as a combat sports game:meh:

Same here if only it was a 3D fighter. I love martial art movies so the fact that it's being implemented as a fighting game..genius:D. Not too sure where you can find a community on it..maybe Discord?

And yea you're right about it will grow on to me. I can imagine Goh and Vanessa being a specialist in submissions fighting out on crazy Virtua Fighter-esque stages. Brad Burns already fits in. So I definitely see where you're getting at.

You make a fair point, but with sega making their own engine??? I doubt it, they seem skint and cheaper than capcom/namco, if the more profitable games are going unreal I doubt Sega would buck the trend. But anything is possible.

Oh yea I'm definitely into kung fu movies! Of Course! But keep in mind I'm not suggesting they make VF into a UFC game  No , no, no, no. Its fine the way it is. I am suggesting AM2 change the launching and floating animations to stumble, stagger, crunch, and stun animations, and then market VF to the combat sports game community. No VF should not be a octagon game. Its stages are fine. The combat sports game community would accept VF stages, all of their fighting styles because everybody's style is legit. Even Dural:ROTFL: AM2 would have to change the launching and the floating animations though. That's the only thing that really takes away from the realism. In this interview Yu Suzuki says this:

      https://www.ign.com/articles/2002/03/12/speaking-to-yu

" IGN: How does Virtua Fighter 4
      see deal
fit into the original vision of the Virtua Fighter series? And how does VF4 continue the legacy and the ideas from the first game, and how does it differ?

Yu Suzuki: From the start, I wanted to make a real fighter, like a Chinese Kung Fu game, and using 3D technology we were able to do that. Virtua Fighter 1 technology was very primitive, with polygons and simple Gouraud Shading. Virtua Fighter 1 looked like it was made up of robots. So with Virtua Fighter 2, we wanted to change the robots into humans, using texture-mapping technology. With Virtua Fighter 3 we wanted to go outside of the ring. One of the central ideas was to remove the fighting ring. The concept behind Virtua Fighter 4 was to take the good points from 1, 2 and 3, and to try to develop the good points from those. So, rather than being a progression from 1, 2 and 3, Virtua Fighter 4 is compilation of the good things from all three previous games.
      "

Those are Yu Suzuki's own words he wanted to make a real fighter like a Chinese Kung Fu game!! VF6 should continue with that goal and add the realism that is possible with today's hit physics and animations.

If you look at Yu Suzuki's early interviews you'll see he clearly thought of Virtua Fighter as a fun martial arts kung fu simulator. He really did;)

      Check out this marketing hype:

      https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/virtua-fighter-4-ps2/

In that marketing description they describe Virtua Fighter as a Martial Arts SIm

Exactly. Those other fighting game fans, will go right back to Tekken, Street Fighter, or whatever fighting game, that is categorized as hype etc. VF fans have been saying that same thing for years.

Artistically that looks nice but those graphics are dated, it's not just the low poly and last-gen shaders, there's a lot about it that doesn't look like it belongs in this generation.

They simply cannot compare to MK11's physically based rendering pipeline. I know MK11 runs on a heavily modified Unreal 3 (might as well be UE4). They'll have to learn UE4 properly to utilise it.

I just don't see SEGA investing the money to upgrade their engine, CAPCOM & NAMCO have the money and they won't - why would I expect relatively broke SEGA to do so

Tekken 7 doesn't look as good as MK11 but it's got that clean look from highres textures, polys, better shaders

what? I would be really disappointed if VF6 released with poor looking in-game motion like mk11 & T7, textures & shaders can't fix or make up for that

I'd be honest, the characters models from.Tekken Tag2 look artistically tons better than T7. Unreal made the characters look weird somehow.

      MK11 looks much better.

But yeah, I lived and still love VF5 graphics. I think their engine is what the PS3 era Yakuza games were based on. It's built on through the arcade boards and what not.

I am not sure if they would be willing to work on upgrading it or jump to UE, but I know I that I have always likee VF's visual direction. So I think visuals aren't something I'd be worried about.

Boy... this is something very shocking for me. So they, at least, paid attention to the post VF after 5FS. I've been thinking Sega never had a look back on VF ever after VF5FS considering the IP was nothing but pants to them.

I don't agree with Ed on a reboot but... Given what he did to get the MK franchise back on track and the amount of Kontent in the games storylines and mechanics. I wouldn't mind if he wrote the treatment for a VF6 Story. Time to flesh out the characters. Salute Ed Boon.

Lol, as divisive of a figure as Ed Boon, or NRS as a whole are, I like the fact that he at least brings some awareness to this issue, it's not like we're talking about some obscure game that has a dead community, Virtua Fighter seems as alive as it was 5 years ago.

Well, seeing SFV sales, I can't blame Sega not having balls to invest into it.

However, waht is unacceptable is having ported 5FS on PS4 (and I guess x64), and just release it as a demo in Yakuza instead of finishing the job...

It becomes a pain to simply being able to play the game.

VF5FS is like an abandon ware on Xbox 360/One now...

How is it ok and possible to sell a game in this current state.

The game sold a little bit and keep selling (i mean it's still purchasable) since it got backward compatibility. It's unacceptable.

And yes, i've already asked Microsoft and SEGA about that.
